The Season of Lent
Liturgical Color: Purple
The season of Lent is a forty day period (excluding Sundays) of fasting and strict prayer. During this time we remember the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness. Traditionally speaking one "gives up" something during this time in order to bring them closer to God.
Purple is normally used, but some places use unbleached linen or burlap as vestments and hangings. The music is toned back and the word "Alleluia" is omitted from all services. Flowers are sometimes removed and the Cross is veiled.
Here are three hymns used during Lent. The first, the Passion Chorale, is normally used in Holy Week.
O Sacred Head, Sore Wounded (Passion Chorale)
Lord, Who Throughout these Forty Days
Now Let Us All with One Accord
Go To Dark Gethsemane (Holy Week)
