THE KICKAZ HISTORY

The Kickaz story starts in early 1999. Brothers Ben and Keith were jamming in their basement studio and Ben began strumming a fresh guitar riff. Keith started playing a phat beat to the riff and the music for the song "Where'd Ya Go?" began to form. Ben then began writing down words about a personal issue (which we need not get into now) he had been going through at the time. That night the brothers recorded the original version of the aforementioned song, and a dream was born. Later in 1999, Ben wrote various other songs that are still favourites amongst Kickaz fans such as "Sidewalk Blues". The band began brainstorming names and came up with many, but none clicked the way "The Kickers" did. So they started playing under that name. As the year 2000 rolled around, the two rocking boys realised they weren't going to get too far without a solid bass player who would capture the vision and vigour of the band (The fellas "...went through bass players like facial tissues" as Keith put it). As Ben wrote more songs, the two jammed on various occasions with countless bass players to see if one could be found. One bass player who caught the fellas' attention was Ben's good friend Brian. Brian's style melded perfectly with Keith's solid beats and Ben's ground-breaking song-writing. Brian's joining the band came with the breakup of his previous band "Fuzzle", for which he was the lead singer/guitarist. Ben however was forced to take time off from the band, and so the idea to add Brian to the roster was put on hold. As Ben was able to get back to the music, Keith was unable to join Ben for a gig , so Ben and Brian had a friend (Chris Oldham) fill in on drum duty for the gig. This furthured the Kickaz support and their first true fans were made that night. In early 2001, the Kickaz recorded some acoustic songs (of which two appeared on the band's first release). The three went on many a short tour including one of Asia which landed many spots in both Japan and Korea. While at a concert in Korea fans came up to the band and told them how much they "like da Kickaz" (liked the Kickers). The three superstars thought about it and knew that the name "The Kickaz" would serve them better in expanding their fanbase as it was much more catchy than "The Kickers". After the 2001-02 school year had begun, the boys went into The Balcony Studio with engineers Stuart Thomas and Simon Samuel and recorded 6 brand new songs written mostly by Ben with some collaboration by bassist Brian, and the songs turned out better than the boys had been expecting. With 2002, came the release of the Kickaz highly anticipated, long awaited debut album entitled "Break The Mould", garnering rave reviews from fans globally. 2002 brought a European tour, support from stars such as Enriqué Iglesias, and a rivetingly savage accident in which Brian was sidelined for a few months with injuries to his lower limbs. The band got back together in late 2002 to record a second full length album. This time the guys recorded 9 new songs (again at Balcony with Simon Samuel) with a more experimental and mature mentality, covering a wide range of issues, both personal and public. The band followed the release of the new album with an unusual tour, on which they only played previously unreleased songs in small venues. With the release of "The New Prose", however, came less than satisfactory support, which prompted no less than the decision amongst the band members to go their separate ways. The band cut the "B-side Tour" shorter than planned, and called it quits. In Ben's words "The breakup of the band came as a result of an accumulation over the years of lower than expected sales and support, and the changing of three lives' directions." The Kickaz are forever grateful to all who supported them in their four year adventure, and will remain a legacy in rock and roll history.
