Part

San Francisco, That weekend
Riley was off talking with some other people and Buffy was at the snack table, putting small amounts of food on her plate. Another person came beside her. She turned to see who it was and dropped her fork.
"Angel? What are you doing here?" She asked him in shock.
"I was about to ask you the same question," Angel replied.
"I came here with Riley," Buffy said, emphasizing the name. *So there!* She thought. *You don’t get away with leaving like that.*
Angel smiled tightly. "That’s nice."
Buffy glared at him. "And what about you?"
"I came here with Kate," he replied curtly.
Buffy swallowed. "On a date?"
Angel nodded uncomfortably. Buffy glowered. "Oh, so it’s unfair to me for us to be together, but it’s okay for you to date Kate?" She spat out, hissing the name ‘Kate’ as though it was venomous.
"It’s different," Angel said, swallowing hard.
"Oh really? How?"
Angel didn’t answer, he had nothing to say.
Buffy scowled at his silence. "I get it," she said angrily. "You use me, torture me, pretend to love me, and when you’re done with me, you go find someone else. Okay, fine. I can’t believe I wasted my time on you! Good bye, Angel."
She stormed off angrily and Angel watched her go sadly.
***************
"Buffy, there’s somebody I want you to meet," Riley said with a smile.
"Okay," Buffy said, forcing a smile. After that scene with Angel she didn’t feel like meeting anybody.
Riley took her hand and led her across the room. He tapped a medium-height blond on the shoulder. She turned around.
"Buffy, meet Kate. Kate, meet Buffy," Riley said, grinning like an idiot. The man beside Kate turned around. Angel again.
"Hi Buffy," Kate said with a smile.
"Hi," Buffy said, smiling thinly.
"Riley, Buffy, this is my date, Angel," Kate said.
"Hi," Angel said quietly.
"Hi, Angel," Riley said, still grinning.
"We’ve met," Buffy said coldly.
"How nice," Kate said, smiling warmly.
"So what have you been doing with yourself, Kate?" Riley asked. And they turned away in their own private conversation. Angel and Buffy watched them as they walked away, absorbed in what they were saying, and sighed simultaneously.
Buffy turned to Angel, working hard to control her emotions. "Does she know yet? About your…condition?"
Angel shook his head, his face expressionless. "She doesn’t need to know."
Buffy shrugged. "So, you screw her yet?"
Angel looked appalled. "What?"
"You know, did you and Kate sleep together?" Buffy’s face grew harder. "Did you like it? Was she better than me? You know, because she’s got so much more experience she must’ve been the better lay, right?"
"Buffy!" Angel exclaimed, grabbing her shoulders. He looked her square in the eye. "I didn’t sleep with her."
"Oh," Buffy said, registering that. "Well…good." She looked down, then looked up again. "You know what, Angel? I have to go, good bye."
With that she turned and walked away.

Next day,
Buffy sat across from Riley at the restaurant in the hotel, having breakfast. She sighed. "Why do you want to move?" She asked him.
"I was offered a great chance, Buffy. We’re talking LA and a high-paying job!"
"But, LA, with…mean, mean people. Bad people! You-you don’t want to move here. I mean, you’ll be all alone-"
"No I won’t," he cut her off.
"N-no?" Buffy stuttered.
"I want you to come to LA with me," he told her, smiling.
"But I live in Sunnydale, at UC Sunnydale! And-and my roommate is Willow! My best friend, Willow! I can’t leave poor Willow!"
"Buffy, why don’t you just try it for a week?" Riley asked.
Buffy sighed. "I used to live in LA," she admitted to him. "I-I like Sunnydale better."
Riley looked at her. "The job is just on a trial basis. We might not stay. Please come, Buffy?"
"Okay," she relented. "But I’m only staying a week, that’s it."
"Thanks," Riley said, kissing her. "I promise we’ll have fun."
"Yeah, fun!" Buffy said, trying to come off as enthusiastic, but having trouble getting there. "Um, you know, I’m going to go to the library…I have to, uh, study."
Riley looked at her strangely, but just nodded. "Okay, bye," he said as Buffy walked through the door and left.
