This FAQ has been created to address some questions arising from the search for Chansey's Lucky Egg and to aid in it's discovery and use.

What is a Lucky Egg?

Lucky EggThe Lucky Egg may be found very infrequently on wild Chansey Pokémon. When the Egg is held by any Pokémon, it raises the experience points (XP) received by that Pokémon during battle.

How Much Does It Raise Experience?

The Pokémon holding it during battle receives 50% more XP for the encounter.

50% & 125% !!!If the Pokémon using it is a traded Pokémon (i.e. its original trainer is not you), then the bonus is even better. The standard bonus for traded Pokémon is a 50% boost of XP. If a traded Pokémon holds a Lucky Egg, it gets 50% more of the boosted experience, or a total bonus of 125% from standard. Below are examples in table form.

For Pokémon X:

Untraded Pokémon

Traded Pokémon

Standard XP

XP w/ Lucky Egg

Standard XP

XP w/ Lucky Egg

100

150

150

225

1,200

1,800

1,800

2,700

So if a traded Pokémon holds the Lucky Egg, there will be a total of 2.25 times the standard XP awarded, which is quite a bonus.

Are There Any Disadvantages?

There was a question about what the effect of using the Egg would have on Stat Experience. SE is a hidden value for each stat (Health, Attack, Defense, etc.) and is accumulated for each battle. It affects how the Pokémon's stats increase. You can find a more detailed FAQ on Stat Experience in our Pokémon Genes FAQ.

In my first attempt to answer this question, I did it the hard way.  I recorded a set of data for a test Pokémon. I used an Exeggute freshly hatched at level 5. I recorded Health, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed for each level 5 through 25. I recorded the first set without the Egg. Then I reset the game without saving and recorded the same information while equipped with the Lucky Egg. If you wish to see the raw data gathered, click here.

The problem with my method was that I didn't have the time nor inclination to level up the test Pokémon to level 100. Nor did I have the equations that define stat experience and how it relates to Stat Points (the additional stat boost you get from SE).

The data I gathered implied there was no important difference between Egg and No Egg since the stats were within one point of each other.  This was an inaccurate conclusion.  The equations I have now predict just that - only leveling up 20 levels will only show a difference of 1.3 stat points.  Observe the use of the Lucky Egg on bonus stat points:

Gained XP using

Approx Stat XP @

Stat Points @

Level 25 Level 100 Level 25 Level 100
No Egg 13, 107 65,535 7.2 63
Lucky Egg 8,738 43,690 5.9 52
Lucky Egg w/Traded Pokémon 5,825 29,126 4.8 42

The effect of the Egg is easily understood.  The user gets more XP for all battles, but gets exactly the same amount of Stat Experience.  Therefore the Pokémon levels up faster and consequently suffers a bit in SE which means not as many boosted Stat Points.  The effect is exacerbated when the Egg is used in conjunction with a traded Pokémon.  It receives huge amounts of XP and levels up like Mario Andretti with a stuck gas petal, but only gains 44% of the Stat XP is should have for the levels it's at.

The bottom line? Compared to a Pokémon at Level 100 which has maxed out it's SE and therefore has received the maximum boost of 63 Stat Points, a traded Pokémon with the Lucky Egg will only have 42 boosted SP, for a difference of 22 points.  That's certainly a drag, but keep in mind that the Pokémon isn't "permanently damaged".  It will still accrue Stat Experience even after level 100 (but not regular XP) and will eventually reach it's maximum (you just have to perform the "Box Trick" on it to force the game to recalculate it's stats.)  For more information about this topic, see the Pokémon Genes FAQ.

The tree might grow 2.25 times as fast, but the fruit isn't quite as sweet.

Where Can I Find a Lucky Egg?

ChanseyAs stated above, only wild Chanseys will have it, and then only rarely. Wild Chanseys may be found only in Kanto, east of Fuchsia City, in the grasses of Routes 13, 14, and 15. They may be encountered Morning, Afternoon, or Evening. I have read from several sources that there is a 4% chance per encounter that it will involve a Chansey. This matches (more or less) what I have observed. I have also noted that they don't seem to come out at all on the weekends (Saturday or Sunday). If this was a coincidence, it was a consistent one.

When you do encounter a Chansey, there is a 3 in 200 chance that it will possess a Lucky Egg. This works out to about a 1 in 66 chance. Not the best of odds, but not impossible either.

How Do I Get a Lucky Egg?

You must use the Thief move on all Chansey's encountered. This is a TM move (TM46) which can be found in Team Rocket's hideout in Mahogany Town. It is a move that almost half of all Pokémon are able to learn (111 of the 251 Pokémon), including (in alphabetical order):

Abra, Aipom, Alakazam, Arbok, Ariados, Crobat, Cubone, Delibird, Diglett, Dodrio, Duduo, Dugtrio, Dunsparce, Ekans, Electabuzz, Elekid, Exeggcute, Exeggutor, Farfetch'd, Fearow, Forretress, Furret, Gastly, Gengar, Girafarig, Gligar, Golbat, Granbull, Grimer, Haunter, Heracross, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Hitmontop, Hoothoot, Houndoom, Houndour, Jynx, Kabuto, Kabutops, Kadabra, Kingler, Koffing, Krabby, Ledian, Ledyba, Lickitung, Machamp, Machoke, Machop, Magby, Magmar, Mankey, Marowak, Meowth, Mew, Misdreavus, Mr. Mime, Muk, Murkrow, Natu, Nidoking, Nidoqueen, Nidoran (F), Nidoran (M), Nidorina, Nidorino, Noctowl, Octillery, Omanyte, Omastar, Paras, Parasect, Persian, Pidgeot, Pidgeotto, Pidgey, Pinsir, Politoed, Poliwag, Poliwhirl, Polywrath, Porygon, Porygon2, Primeape, Raticate, Rattata, Remoraid, Sandshrew, Sandslash, Scizor, Scyther, Sentret, Skarmory, Smoochum, Sneasel, Snubbull, Spearow, Spinarak, Stantler, Sudowoodo, Tangela, Teddiursa, Tyrogue, Ursaring, Venomoth, Venonat, Weezing, Xatu, Yanma, and Zubat.

This move is not a normally-learned move (i.e. learned by leveling up) by any Pokémon, so the TM must be used to bestow the move.

Important Note: Use the Thief TM only on a male Pokémon. Unless you do you will not be able to pass the move down to future generation Pokémon that you breed since movesets are passed down through the Father.

The Thief move is used in battle with another Pokémon. If the move hits, it will do some damage to the opponent and take whatever item it is holding. Your Pokémon must not be holding an item or the move will not take anything. If the move succeeds (i.e. it did damage), you are not holding an item, but nothing else happens, then the opponent was not holding an item.

Strategies

There are few suggestions that can help you beyond what has already been said, but there are a few pointers.

Miscellaneous

The Lucky Egg can be sold for 100. This just shows that shopkeepers sometimes have no idea what things are really worth.

The Prima's Official Strategy Guide to Pokémon Gold & Silver Versions states that the Lucky Egg doubles the experience points earned. They are in error. Other than this I have found the text to be very useful and helpful.

My Experience

I really wanted a Lucky Egg, so I spent weeks of on-and-off again searching in the grass of Route 15. After about three weeks and exactly 42 Chanseys later (I kept a record) I encountered one on Tuesday morning and received the glorious message "Greymouser stole Lucky Egg from its foe". A Snoopy-dance ensued.

I had only recently come up with the strategy of using Max Repels and a level 25 Pokémon. Perhaps if I had been doing that before then I would have found a Lucky Egg much sooner. My encounter ratio for Chanseys went from about 4% (1 in 25) to about 10% (1 in 10) using the Max Repel method.

Conclusion

Searching for a Lucky Egg can almost be as exasperating as trying to capture the Legendary Dogs. It just takes loads of patience. If you are searching for one, use the suggestions I mentioned here and it won't take as long. My Blissey now carries around the Lucky Egg in her eggpouch and she's in Blissey heaven!

Good Luck!
