Installation/Setup
[Jiggs 07-24-2002 8:00 PM]

The installation and setup took about 10 hours for me to complete. If I were to do it again, however, I would probably have it done in just a few hours. I would go ahead and walk everyone through it, but FFXI Online does a good enough job of that.

The setup first involved the internet configuration. This didn't take too long, though I couldnt follow the guide on FFXI online because I have a PPPoE connection. Anybody else with SBC Ameritech should also be using PPPoE. When the time comes, just talk to me, and I'll gladly walk you through the setup for it.

Next, I had to install the Playonline Viewer. This didn't take very long, but the sign up for it did. They then ask you for the registration number (which you get inside your FFXI package) and personal information. Here's where things got dirty...

First, they want your name in kanji and katakana. This was easy, but I had to wait for the information to become available to me. Then they want a birthday, in year-month-day format. Now comes the real trouble. They ask for a zip code, county-city-division, and house number. All is easy, except for the input of the Japanese characters (for the county-city-division part). I eventually thought to searchthe zip code, and sure enough, the kanji I needed appeared in one of the results.

The next part was figuring out how to input it. To do so, you can type the English spelling and watch the hiragana appear before your very eyes. Then you hit spacebar, and can convert the hiragana into kanji by selecting the desired characters. I was able to get the county and city easily, but I had trouble with the county part. In time, I was able to figure it out, and I was off to complete my objectives.

Next, they ask you for your telephone, e-mail (not free), and credit card information. Once you finish that, you get your playonline ID and password, as well as your Play Online e-mail address. This concluded the Play Online setup and installation. Next was the FFXI install and setup!

To install FFXI, you must do so through the Play Online Viewer, not the FFXI disc! The install process begins as soon as you select the install option, and it takes about 30 minutes. Next, you must sign on with your Play Online account and download the latest Play Online Viewer version patch, which takes another 20 minutes. After that, you must register your Contents ID for playing FFXI. This takes no time at all. Then, finally, you download the latest FFXI patch (yet another 20 minutes), and you're ready to play!
