Story

Seulgeist was born Vincent la Forjai of the highly respected and influential Wohlhabend Family Clan. Once a poor, starving, nomadic tribe, the Wohlhabend traveled throughout Vana’Diel struggling in order to survive during the harsh times of war. Countless surprise attacks at the hands of the Shadow Lord’s garrisons of beasts made the journey a precarious affair for the herd of travelers. During one of the raids, the Wohlhabend were surrounded by several squads of the Shadow Lord’s demonic soldiers. Fighting was their only option.

One brave warrior stood above the rest and helped to ward off the beastly hoard. That warrior was Ewiger la Forjai, a blacksmith and second-in-command of the Wohlhabend. Ewiger was a hero amongst the tribe, heralded as their savior from evil. He became a shining example for the others to follow. Under his guidance, Ewiger lead the people to the city of Bastok, where the once roaming clan finally settled down in order to maintain a sound and financially stable lifestyle. The la Forjai family, consisting of Ewiger, his wife Jaina, and their newly born son Vincent, established a quaint little weapon shop just outside of their new home. Ewiger’s skills as a blacksmith helped to bring food to the table, and soon he hoped to pass on the trade to his son.

After years of hard work and dedication to their craft, the people of the Wohlhabend Clan turned their humble shops into mass profit-producing organizations thanks in part to the local guilds. Because of his contributions during the pilgrimage, Ewiger la Forjai was voted to the position of Leader of the Clan after the prior had died of an ailment. His family moved into the state house, where they no longer had to continue the tedious work of the blacksmith, although young Vincent decided to further his training. While his parents enjoyed the extravagant lifestyle, Vincent toiled day and night making weapons for soldiers of the army and other passer-bys.

During the Shadow Lord’s now infamous “Winter Campaign”, regiments of his minions traveled town to town ravaging and pillaging whatever they could in an orgy of death and destruction while the inhabitants slept in their beds. One night, Vincent stayed awake in the late hours of the night trying to fill an order from a rebel faction. As he was locking the door to the shop, he noticed several dark, brooding figures leaving his parent’s stately residence. Cautiously, Vincent made his way to the back of the house, entering with his guard up. He slowly maneuvered through several rooms hearing a ghastly sound emanating from one of the upstairs room. Vincent grabbed the first sharp object he could find and opened the door to Ewiger and Jaina’s room.

There, on the bed, were the dead bodies of his parents. Looming over them was one of the Shadow Lord’s beasts; a high ranking officer from the looks of it. Vincent stood in place horrified by what he was seeing. The beast turned to the frightened teen, blood dripping from his mouth. Vincent’s unbound sadness turned into rage, and he lunged towards the monster. He used whatever was in his hand and stabbed downward, gouging the beast in his left eye. The monster howled with pain and threw Vincent aside with his mammoth claw. The beast fled out the window, leaving Vincent to suffer with the grief of his loss.

A few years went by since the death of his parents. Vincent continued to work in the weapons shop with an internal wrath festering within his being. On the very night he endured the tremendous loss, he swore vengeance against the “Un Auge Bestia”, or “One Eyed Beast” in his tribal language of Sprache. One day, while talking with an unknown member of the Wohlhabend, he learned that this stranger belonged to a rebel faction known as the Verborgene (hidden ones). They were a band of soldiers who commenced midnight raids on squads of the Shadow Lord’s army while they camped. Knowing that the Verborgene would one day cross paths with Un Auge Bestia, Vincent joined their cause.

Word of the Verborgene’s surprise victories against the Beast minions gave the party a legendary status amongst the Wohlhabend. The secret behind their success lay in their fighting form, that of the Endfestigkeit. During the formation of the Verborgene, one of their members had stolen and translated text from the Elvaan’s Religious Teachings, notably the forbidden art form combining hand-to-hand combat and the dark arts. The Verborgene used the teachings to create the Endfestigkeit, translated to “ultimate strength”.

Using the Endfestigkeit, Vincent and his brethren killed countless monsters in their sleep, the same way they killed his parents. Rumors surfaced that Vincent’s sworn enemy was stationed not too far from their temporary base of operations. Hell bent on revenge, Vincent went without his fellow soldiers to the enemy camp and left a path of destruction in his wake. He methodically went tent to tent, slaughtering and beating to death any inhabitant.

Finally, he made his way to what seemed to be the CO’s tent. Vincent stormed in, only to realize that this was not the one who murdered his parents. Devastated, Vincent slowly walked through the camp back towards the base. Suddenly, a monster grabbed his arm. Without thinking, he reached behind him, grabbed the creature’s neck, and twisted it violently until in snapped. Vincent turned ready to fight, only to realize that he had killed one of his own. The others soon came from behind and saw what he had done.

Vincent was exiled from the Verborgene and disowned from the Wohlhabend for killing a clan member. Vincent was banished from ever returning to his shop and home town. Lost and alone, Vincent wandered throughout Vana’Diel searching for any that would accept him while still looking for Un Auge Bestia. One day he was attacked by a group of Goblins. Even with the Endfestigkeit on his side, he was no match for them without the Verborgene. Vincent was brutally beaten by the Goblins. Just before he lost consciousness, he saw a Galkan Warrior come to his aide. When he finally awoke, he found himself in a small inn. There, in his room, were the Galkan who had saved him, a Mithra, a Taru Taru, and an Elvaan.

The group of travelers explained their plight to Vincent. Left with nothing else in his life, Vincent gladly joined their cause. But before he could set off with them on their journey, he had to remove the shackles of the past that still weighed him down. Vincent changed his name to Seulgeist, or “lone spirit”, successfully breaking his ties with the Wohlhabend Clan. Seulgeist joined his new kinsmen on their journey to defeat the Shadow Lord. Seulgeist now had a true purpose with his fellow members of the Verloren Altersklasse; the Lost Generation...
