Chapter Seven:  Amazing Things

Question: What were some of the most amazing things youve scene?

Number one.  The
Morrow Castle when it washed up near the Convention Hall in Asbury Park.  I was about seven years old.  It was still smoking and there were small boats everywhere.  It was a luxury liner that caught fire just off Belmar.  Hundreds were killed and people were jumping off the deck (I didn't see that), I only saw it the next day when it came aground in Asbury.  My father took me down to see it.

Another one was when I was carrying Chris and I was six or seven months pregnant.  I was at the track (MPJC) and there was a grass race being run.  Eight horses fell going unto the first turn.  There were bodies EVERYWHERE, I thought surely someone had to have gotten killed. They flagged the other horses off at the top of the stretch so they wouldn't trample the jockeys and horses still on the turf.  It was awful.  I went straight to the bar and an old friend of Bud and mine bought me a badly needed drink.  I thought I would pass out, I was so shaky. Then I went home. Believe it or not, no one was killed but a couple of riders were badly hurt.

Another amazing thing was that I didn't get a scratch in that accident I was in.  Everyone said I looked like "JOEY CHITWOOD".  He was a daredevil stunt driver in the 40's.  That really was amazing!

Another was a fight Bud and I had while I was pregnant with Chris.  He came home drunk and started a fight.  He had already kicked me in the side the week before and I was afraid he'd knock me down again, so when he came at me I hauled off and punched him in the mouth and broke his dentures.  Teeth were everywhere.  All over the living room and sun porch.  He backed down after that.

I really haven't seen too many things that were actually amazing.  I did see Bud pick up a brand new stove alone and put it on his truck, then picked up a washer and dryer alone and did the same thing with them.  He was really strong.  That was what married life to him was like.

The 1939 Worlds Fair was amazing.  I was especially thrilled at the Trion and Persiphere.  They were the symbol of the fair.  The Trylon was a HUGE pointed sphere that looked a lot like the Washington Monument.  It stood along side of the Persiphere, which was a HUGE round ball that you could go in and see the world of tomorrow.  Our glass trip went there.  We had a great time.

The Empire State building was a beauty.  I always wanted to go see the Statue of Liberty, its always been one of my dreams and wanted to take Chris too, but we never got there.  I hope CJ gets to go there someday.  I probably would cry.
