Thematic Interpretation of the Koran

By Prof. Liaquat Samma

In the name of Allah (the one God), the Rehman and the Raheem (The Provider of everything needed little by little and very much)

Chapter 1

Al-Fatiha

(The Victory- giving Chapter) (It opens the door of Deen (the code of life), the right way and gives victory over wrong ways of life)

1:1 – The praise (and appreciation) is for Allah (the Authority who gives guidance and commands everything),Rab (Lord and Master of everything known in the universe who helps everything grow physically and mentally).

1:2 – for the one who gives the needed guidance and provisions little by little and very much.

1:3 – for the King (one with powers) of the period of the law (Allah’s Deen) when it will be established in the society. (maalik means one who posses powers to do something, a king, a master, and an owner. Owner is not appropriate here. Deen means law, a way of life, or a set of guiding principles in life. Judgement doesn’t seem to be appropriate here because Jaza or Hisaab are not used. Youm means a period, a day, or time. Period is appropriate here.)

1:4 – We worship (obey and show it by bowing down in ritual worship) (only) you (and will do so in future) and seek help from you (in establishing the law).

1:5 – Guide us (tell us what laws to follow) to the straight (right) path (God’s law and its details)

1:6 – The path of those who got all the good things in life (anamtaa) (for happiness, comfort, and success in life).

1:7 – Not the path (way) of those with you were displeased (for their disobedience and therefore they were punished) and not of those who went astray (by following some other way).

Comments:

The theme here is “Guidance to the straight path to follow it”. God’s purpose is that all humans must follow His straight path instead of the path of the human’s leaders and their forefathers. His way is the establishment of His deen, the code of life. The process is explained by mentioning the pre-requisites of praising the law and declaring it, promising to obey and ask for His help in establishing it in the society, and desiring to know the whole set of rules to follow. The effect will result in happiness and prosperity. As a contrast the wrong ways of life are also described. It is also explained in the beginning that God is the authority to give the law, the provider of the guidance in every necessary way, and the king of the time when only He should be obeyed and none else, for example the leaders of the humans. All the words used relate to the guidance and its credibility. The law is common in the use of all the attributes of God. Allah is the lawgiver, Rab is the lord and master who issues the orders, Rehman and Raheem show His kindness to the needed command for the good of the humans, and King shows the implementation of the law. This system of life was established during the twenty-three years of period under the Prophet of God, Muhammed (may God bless and help his message to spread). The theme is given in the last verse after developing it gradually and logically.
