This was when the "Juice" was first starting to flow. There were
numerous bands that appeared at that show including "The Kelvins", "Spaghetti Cake", and "Flipper Dave". Not to minimize the performances by the other bands, who were all fantastic, but I was amazed by the quality of musicianship and showmanship of "Dr. Juice". I don't remember all of what they did that day but it included covers of two of my favorite groups,
Steeley Dan and Frank Zappa that were just incredibly well done. They
were actually a last minute substitution for a group that couldn't make
it. They put on a show that was just incredible for a group that had
only been together for a short time at that point.
"Dr. Juice" made quite a few fans that day that are still making it out
to see them, when they can. Although we can't be at every show
physically, we are their in spirit giving them the support and well wishes that they showed our friend, Kat Krooner, that day and all the other days
that followed, good and bad.
Near the end of that night at the benefit, I remember Julie coming up
to me with a look of concern and saying, "Have you seen my drummer?". I
couldn't help her 'cause I hadn't seen him, but even though she didn't
seem too worried, I felt bad for her and looked around for him for a
while until I had to do some things. (I was one of the organizers of the
benefit.) In fact, I didn't find out if she ever found him until I went
with Kat to see them and there he was behind his drumset. During their
first break I asked Julie where she found him. He was at the bar
inside. I wonder what he was doing there?
Thanks to Julie, Mike, Dennis, and Joe for being who you are and doing
what you do.
