Happy:
The first thing you hear in this song is a bassline that reminds you of Grease. Then just after the bridge (that i really like), the chorus kicks in and believe me it is a sing along one. It's in the same style as "Uh la la la" but in my opinion it's better (although not as good as the almighty edit), but it can't beat the "classicness" of "Uh la la la". One thing I could do without is the "Cher effect" at the start of the song. 8/10
Change your life:
This song is also in the style of "Uh la la la" but to me it's also in the same style as "Keep on movin'" (although I prfer this to Keep on movin' mainly cos it doesn't have the "Hey Alexia, I love your party blah blah blah" bit). This is quite cheery especially the "woah woah oh" bits. However despite the fact it's a good song, DWA were right not to release this cos like "Keep on movin'" it's not strong enough to be a single, but then again "Keep on movin'" was released as a single... 7.5/10
Goodbye:
For some reason I can't think of much to write about this except it's one of the best tracks on the album. A big highlight for this track is the backing vocals at the end. 9.5/10
Baby baby baby:
This is my least favourite track from the album. To be honest, I don't really know why I don't like it much but to me it sounds like a Steps B- side. The chorus is quite catchy but to me it's just average pop. 7/10
Te amo:
When I first heard this I was prepared to give it 4 out of 10. But then I listened to it again and I really liked it. Alexia sings in a new style which although it isn't her "best signing voice", it does show diversity. The only problem I have with this track (apart from the "ding ding ding" bit in the beat) is the backing vocals, at one point the backing vocals are too quiet and are drowned out by the music and I don't like the "yeah yeah" bits in the chorus or the other vocals which sounds like people are talking over the track. Besides that, I agree with Youri Gispen, it is beautiful. 8/10
Giddy up:
Lets just say this; "I was prepared to hate this". Do I hate it though? No- but lets say the name "Elvis" springs to mind. This is surprisingly good and shows once again that Alexia isn't afraid to try out different styles. The one thing I hate about this is the "Come on come on relight my fire" bits which sound too shouty. I doubt this will be released as a single, not because it's not strong enough but it's just too un- ninetiesh (or 2000ish- just what are we gonna call the music period of 2000- 2010?), but it would be intrsted to see Alexia's style if this was released, for some reason when I think about this being released as a single I have visions of Alexia wearing the type of clothes that Minnie Mouse wears! 9/10
I want you:
This is a dance ballad- similar to "Claro de luna", but much better. At first I thought "uh-oh" when I heard the guitars (cos to me they sounded like they had been taken straight from the soundtrack to a cowboy film- and I don't mean "Wild wild west"), anyway I like the guitars now. Many people say this song is a copy of "Goodbye" but I both songs are very different, "Goodbye" is the better of the two but "I want you" is more "epic" thanks to it's strings in the chorus. This song scores major plus points from me as the chorus reminds me (although I don't know why) of Nikki French's "Total eclipse of the heart"- not the original one though. This is one of the best on the album. 9/10
Save a prayer:
For this one, I basically have the same thoughts as I had for "Baby baby baby", to me it's (just above) average pop. The chorus is nice and the gospel choir is put to good use but it's not "standout" or to be honest rememberable (but then again I've only heard it twice) or strong enough to be a single. 7.5/10
Shake you up:
Ok heres the "Ann Lee" sounding one, except to me it DOESN'T sound like "2 times". Its really dancey, catchy, (cheeky) and fun. Thats about it except that I'm starting to get tired of the "Cher effect". 9/10
Close to you:
Again, I have the same thoughts about this as I have had about "Baby baby baby" and "Save a prayer", to me it's just average pop. To be honest for both this and "Save a prayer" I was expecting a power ballad along the lines of the great "Hold on" and "Feelings" but these just aren't up to standard. It is a good track, but maybe I'm just against it cos of what I was expecting of it. 7.5/10
The rain:
For the final part of the album we get back to eurodance, and what a great song this is! The bridge is great and Im glad that now with the eurodance songs we're getting away from the "2 verses and a bit of music before the 1st chorus and 1 verse and a bit of music before the 2nd chorus" style. The backing vocals, especially in the choruses are great too. If theres one thing I hate about this track, it's the heavy breathing signing in the middle 8 and the end. 9/10
Let the music play:
This is probably the best final song on an album I've ever heard, and if Sony UK moves it's place around on the UK version of "Happy" then I WILL be mad. Anyway, this has GOT TO be released as a single (DWA if you are reading this release it summer 2000). It's very reminisent of "The music I like" but is way more anthemic (and catchier). Robyx's vocals are great too. What more can I say? It's a eurodance anthem. 9.5/10
The album on the whole
Like "The party", this album has a nice mix of different styles, although unlike "The party"theres no really bad tracks. One problem with this album is theres way tto much of the "Cher effect" which I hope is something that is dropped from the next album. The one thing that this album seems to be missing (except for a power ballad that I've mentioned earlier before) is a spanish version of one of the songs. But all in all, this is the best of all three Alexia albums, and it certainly is an album Alexia should be "Happy" with! |
