This year’s Midem conference was an extra special event for talented 31 year old Italian vocalist Alessia Aquilani (aka Alexia), as she signed a worldwide contract with Sony Dance Pool for licensing of all future projects beginning with her recent UK Top 10 hit, ‘Uh La La La’.
Alexia began studying music and the piano when only seven years old, and when aged 12, began to study dance.. In 1990 she became part of the DWA team as a studio vocalist for groups such as Double You before going on to become the female vocalist in the Ice MC project, singing vocals on hits including ‘Think About The Way’, ‘It’s A Rainy Day’ and ‘Take Away The Colour’. Alexia’s first solo single was ‘Me and You’, a duet with old friend Double You, released in August 1995. The three followup singles from her million selling debut album, ‘Fan Club,’ - ‘Summer Is Crazy’, ‘Number One’ and ‘Uh La La La’ were all No.1 hits in Italy and top five successes in Finland and Spain.
The remarkable Italian is produced by Italian superstar producer Robyx who began his career as a producer in 1983 and has had an unstoppable series of smash hits since then. In his career he has sold more than six million singles and two million albums with artists like Double You, Ice MC, Savage, Corona and Alexia.
Alexia’s new single, ‘Gimme Love’, hits UK stores on 11 May, with her new album to be released in early June.
When did you first become involved in the music industry? My first important project was ICE MC. I sang all the female parts in many of his hits. The voice on ‘Think About The Way (Boom Digi Boom)’ is mine. This song is on the soundtrack of ‘Trainspotting’. Musically, what is your ultimate goal for '98? In 1997 I had chart positions in every European country with ‘Uh La La La’. This year I hope to reach USA and Japan too, but also I want to reconfirm my success with the new single and the new album. What producers and remixers would you most like to work with, and why? I do all my work with Robyx. I think he is the best producer in Italy and maybe in Europe too. We have a very great feeling together. Describe how you feel each time you hear your record has hit the top of the charts? I go crazy every time. A few days ago, when I heard about my new entry at No.10 in the UK, I was screaming for the whole day. Tell me about your new single, "Gimme Love". My producer and I have tried to put a lot of musical influences on this record. The song is radio friendly, with a strong groove and a very catchy melody. What is the Italian dance scene like? I don’t like the Italian dance scene at the moment. A lot of great European productions are not working here at all. What is your favourite dance record at the moment? I like Janet Jackson, but also one dance remix of ‘Frozen’ by Madonna that I heard yesterday on the radio. What advice do you have for aspiring singers? Be strong, work hard and try to find a strong producer/label.
