The Brasilian born producer Amon Tobin, known as Cujo before signing with Ninjatune, fuses hip-hop and jungle into a hard-edged sound that is all his own. When you hear a Tobin track, you know right away that it's him. Whether you're tipped off by the gratuitous jazz and classical samples or the hard-driving beats, there's just a flavour about all of Tobin's songs that makes them stand out. Through his three full-length albums he has developed into one of the more intelligent djs on the scene, while still staying true to his own style. Whether it's heavy trip-hop tracks like Sordid or 4 Ton Mantis, psychadelic junglesque tunes like Nightlife, or even tracks that meld the two styles like Deo, Tobin is always in good form. Even at his live shows, which are often one-man affairs, Tobin manages to add his own flair to every record he plays, making each track sound like an original Amon Tobin creation. |
