Home - Countries Visited - St Helena and Ascension Island - 1998

Both St. Helena and Ascension are British-held islands in the far reaches of the South Atlantic Ocean. St. Helena's claim to fame is that it was the exile island for Napoleon. It was a pretty drastic isolation, but the British didn't want him continuing to stir up trouble even after his defeat. Ascension is as modern as St. Helena is reminiscent of the past. Bristling with communication equipment, all manner of antennae rose from the rocky mound, looking like a porcupine. Run by the British military, it is primarily a support station for worldwide (and space) communications. James Bond would have had a field day.  Brazil>>
