Rosa McGee,

I finally read your post on page 3 regarding how you make decisions to live a moral life, thanks for pointing me back. I also read that you're writing your PhD thesis! Congrats!

Please convert and come over to our side. We (desperately) need thoughtful and intelligent people like you.

Ah, thanks for the reply. Actually I believe very firmly that there are many catholics who are going to heaven. Ironically, I think there are a great deal of Protestants who are not. Salvation is not by association in a church, as you pointed out but by faith alone in Jesus Christ.

Ironically, I am quite familiar with the Catholic Catechism and have read most of it (I'm trying to remember when I read it whether it was cover to cover or if I scanned parts of it). I still have a copy on my bookshelf. I can understand your frustrations with Protestants as many of them come off as being judgmental and uncaring. I still dislike that about many of them. Either way, I had at one time thought *gasp* of being a priest. Incidentally, after being converted to Christ, I stayed in the Catholic church for a year after which I departed because I did not believe it was for me but still know and appreciate many people who are committed to it. Incidentally, I do not try to talk Catholics out of leaving their church but my main goal is to reiterate that they believe in the truth of the Gospel. Frankly, I think that there is a great deal about the Catholic Church that I agree with. What I love most about the Catholic church is the obvious reverence for God, something we protestants can learn from. I also appreciate their commitment to service and mercy ministries (e.g. Mother Teresa, the Jesuits, and etc). The central issues I do not agree with are the teaching of faith plus works or baptism as being necessary for salvation, papal infallability, purgatory or baptism by desire. Nevertheless, I consider Catholics who truly seek to follow the teachings of Christ to be my colaborers for the cause of Christ. A kingdom divided against itself will not stand.

Hopefully Shokan will enjoy your responses to his questionaire. It might help him avoid some of the research I asked him to do  . I'd be curious to know what was it that brought you to the Catholic church in the first place?

May God richly bless you and thank you for your clarifications of your beliefz.

In His love,

freegrace

ah. i didn't ask you to BELIEVE like me.....i just thought that depression and athieism arn't cause/effects of each other...just like Christianity and violence and cause/effects of each other.
What can you get out of atheism. self-reliance?? Toknow that i'm busting my ass on my own and everything i accomplish is my own is actually the best feeling i've had in a long time. THAT gives me purpose..to be out in the world doing, building, seeing, making. SOmetimes i AM happy. BUt, no happiness lasts forver. I'm happy when i cook. I'm happy when i sit and do my homework while listening to the radio. I'm happy 99% of the time i'm here. It's in the silences where the wolves bear their fangs.

Question Number One
------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Saturday, I said that I'd start answering the 153 questions posted. Please know that I'm not stupid enough to believe:

1. That all of my answers will be 100% correct.
and
2. That my answers will convert anyone to Christianity.
and
3. All of my answers will be really exciting and thought provoking.

(Regarding point number two above: While attending [gasp] Bible college, I was asked on an Intro to Evangelization final to pretend that I was sitting down with a nonChristian and explain to them why Christ died for their sins using the Bible and then lead them through the "sinner's prayer." I failed because I chose to write how impossible it was to PROVE Christ using scripture. I believe that people will only be able to recognize the truth when they are ready. I have a hard time believing that usually truth is recognized when someone else is reading you a cheesy Chick tract explaining God's 4 step plan of salvation. If anyone's unfamiliar with Chick tracts, go to www.chick.com.)

Q. 1
Explain why your God's only son had to die so we can go to heaven when we die.

Because Christians believe that Jesus was fully man and fully God, I don't believe that God's only son HAD to die but that Christ CHOSE to die.

In the Hebrew scriptures (Old Testament) it was common for the Jews to offer sacrifices to God. Usually this was in the form of animals which were brought to the temple and a gift for God. It was prophesized that God would one day provide a human sacrifice for the sins of the world and that animal sacrifices would no longer be necessary for the redemption of sin.

In the New Testament, Jesus becomes, "the Lamb of God which takes away the sin of the world," (John 1:29). Christ's death serves two purposes: it was sacrifice that would save sinners and the sacrifice that would restore man's communion with God by reconciling him to God through "the blood of the covenant," (Matthew 26:28). Christ's sacrifice surpasses all other previous and subsequent sacrifices.

First Amanda, I agree with you 100%. Those three points were good. Keep in mind that I have said repeatedly that my primary goal is not to convert everyone to Christ, but to combat the stereotypes that all Christians are illogical but mostly to combat the stereotype that Christians are unloving. You did a great job in answering the first question. I am sure that Shokan will appreciate your efforts as do I.

Devilmunchkin, check out the poetry thread. I can't believe you doubted your writing about one comment I made. It's great poetry but I thought you were looking for constructive criticism. I wrote you an email in case you can't see it on the thread. I appreciate your input on my question. Have a great evening...freegrace

Freegrace,

Thank you for the clarifications of YOUR belief regarding the Catholic church. I'm pleased to know that you're not a Catholic-hating fundamentalist!

What drove me to the Catholic church? Hmmmm. Well I was "saved" in the Episcopal church, then detoured to the Baptists and the Pentecostals (because I was told that they were closer to God). I attended an Assembly of God college and my faith was completely destroyed by the hypocrisy I found there. Fast forward several years to a man almost dying in my lap at the side of the road after flipping over his motorcycle thus opening up an artery in his neck. He asked me to pray for him since he thought that he was going to die and I did. Later, people went up to my husband and told them how "powerful" my prayer was and that I was truly a "Godly woman." (The man was brought to the hospital via helicopter and lived.) After that experience, I decided that I'd better be a Godly woman again.

I went back to the Episcopal church but was saddened by it's worldliness. My next step was to join the Catholic church because in spite of it's many problems there is absolutely no guesswork in deciding the church's "stand" on anything. I really love the Catechism! In Protestant churches there is a constant differing of opinion and there is no "formal" agreement on any issue. There is with the Catholic church.

That's the story but with tons of sinfulness left out (that I still sometimes miss-because sin can be very fun).

Respectfully,

Amanda Smith

I am proud of your decision. Praise God that He brought you to a church where you could grow. I too am very disgusted by the hypocricy I have found in many protestant churches. I love the service of the Catholic church. Although I must say that there are many Catholics who say the Apostles Creed each week without the foggiest idea of what it means. My dad doesn't believe in God and somehow he is a eucharistic minister! Ouch! My theology is much more in line with the protestants, but I admire the passion for social causes that the catholics have. Consequently, I am an Associate pastor of a church in the middle of the inner-city in Houston, TX where I minister to gang members and drug dealers. It gives me the best of both worlds. Yes, I do agree that Protestants need to be more consistent with their theology but on the other hand, I do not want to have the pope declare it for me. There are pros and cons to each side. Needless to say, I wholeheartedly welcome you here and am glad to see your passion for your faith. May God richly bless you...freegrace

Devilmunchkin, I agree that atheists can be happy. Now imagine, as an atheist, what happens after you die. That doesn't get you somewhat depressed? You are happy with knowing, at most, you'll get a good 100 or so years out of your life. I didn't mean to imply that all atheists walk around depressed all of the time. I know they don't. The comment was brought on by the question "What does your faith do for you in life?". I made that comment because I feel that atheism really doesn't bring much hope to the table. Would you be happier knowing you'll spend eternity in total bliss? Or would you be happier knowing everything is done of your own accord for a relatively minute amount of time? I feel atheism offers proof for the latter. I also feel that is proof of no hope.

i think it actually makes me feel better. But that's also individual. See: i don't WANT to live forever. i don't want to EXIST forever. i want to just cease when i die..no more consciouness...no nothing. it's just over and done.

Why wouldn't you want to live forever if you could be in happiness forever?

Please don't take offense to this, but I feel comments like that are used to soften the blow that you really don't have a choice in the matter.

Gossip brought me here!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, last Friday I was interested in the Manson/McGowan breakup so I came here and then found the thread title intriguing as I love to discuss (argue) theology.

Actually, I really like MM. I like his writings (not the music). I think that he's terribly bright and interesting.

Repectfully,
