Subway's Game

You know that napkin that you get from Subway whenever you buy some food? The one that shows how much healthier a Subway sandwhich is than a Big Mac and a Whopper?

This one.

I never really paid much attention to this napkin when I did patronize this store (which i've stopped because they cost WAY to fucking much), but when I actually took notice of what was on the napkin, my bullshit detector was on higher alert than the US on September 12th. If for some reason you can't read or see the napkin it says this:

The big fancy popular logo at the top "7 subs with 6 grams of fat or less"

Wow SEVEN whole subs? That's pretty good, considering you have like THIRTY THINGS ON YOUR MENU. Shit, I bet I could find SEVEN things on ANY menu that was low fat.

and below:

Our Sandwhiches Fat (g) Cholesterol (mg) Calories
Veggie Delite 3 0 232
Turkey Breast 4 20 282
Turkey Breast & Ham 4 23 288
Roast Beef 5 20 296
Subway Club 5 26 312
Ham 5 25 293
Roasted Chicken Breast 6 48 342

Big Mac 31 85 560
Whopper 40 85 660

No comparison right? Well let's see.

Firstly, Jared must have been a fucking pansy, because I don't know any grown men that get full off nothing but a plain 6-inch Sub.

But let's say you got a Foot Long Sub, which if you don't care about spending the million bucks per sandwhich they charge, is probably what you'll opt for since it's a better deal (and I use the term "deal" as light as possible). Then the facts would look something like this. (Double the food, Double the Facts)

Our Sandwhiches Fat (g) Cholesterol (mg) Calories
Veggie Delite 6 0 464
Turkey Breast 8 40 564
Turkey Breast & Ham 8 46 576
Roast Beef 10 40 592
Subway Club 10 52 624
Ham 10 50 586
Roasted Chicken Breast 12 96 684

Big Mac 31 85 560
Whopper 40 85 660

Wow, already the Cholesterol and Calories are matching up.

But I'm not finished.

Ok, well both the Whopper and the Big Mac include mayonnaise, and no doubt Subway has included that in their nutritional analysis of the sandwiches, so it's only fair to do the same to this. One serving of Subway's mayonnaise is 1 tbsp., which is about, if not less than what they'd put on an average sandwich. In 1 tablespoon of mayo, there is 12 grams of fat, 10 mg of cholesterol, and 110 calories. (nutritiondata.com) So let's add that in, shall we?

Our Sandwhiches Fat (g) Cholesterol (mg) Calories
Veggie Delite 18 10 574
Turkey Breast 20 50 674
Turkey Breast & Ham 20 56 686
Roast Beef 22 50 702
Subway Club 22 62 734
Ham 22 60 696
Roasted Chicken Breast 24 106 794

Big Mac 31 85 560
Whopper 40 85 660

Oooh...well now even the Veggie Delite has more Calories than a Big Mac. Granted, I don't know how many people put mayo on a veggie delite. But, check out all of the other sandwiches that blow both Big Macs and Whoppers out of the water when it comes to calories...the Cholesterol and Fat content are really getting closer too, aren't they?

Still not finished!

The Big Mac is served with cheese, so why not add cheese to these Subway sandwiches? When i used to pay for their overpriced sandwiches, I always put cheese on it. Well, according to nutritiondata.com, both the American Cheese and Pepper Jack Cheese (Don't even try to get cheddar cheese, provologne or swiss cheese, because its MORE fat cholesterol and calories) in ONE serving have 40 calories, 3 grams of fat, and 10 mg of cholesterol. However, on a foot-long sub, they give you roughly THREE servings of cheese! So lets make that 120 calories, 9 grams of fat, and 30 mg of cholesterol.

Our Sandwhiches Fat (g) Cholesterol (mg) Calories
Veggie Delite 27 40 694
Turkey Breast 29 80 794
Turkey Breast & Ham 29 86 806
Roast Beef 31 80 822
Subway Club 31 92 854
Ham 31 90 816
Roasted Chicken Breast 33 136 914

Big Mac 31 85 560
Whopper 40 85 660

WOWZERS. Look at those calories.

Alright, I'll give Subway this, Trans-fat which Big Mac and Whoppers contain, but subway sandwhiches do not, is more unhealthy than other types. But high levels of ANY TYPE OF FAT is unhealthy. ESPECIALLY the saturated fat found in things like cheese. and LOOK AT THAT CHOLESTORAL AND CALORIES. You should be just as concerned with that as you are fat. and also this is for a foot-long sub, and it would be a little less than half that for a 6-inch sub. But half that isn't really impressive either. ESPECIALLY since any half-wit could go to McDonald's or Burger King and order a Big Mac or Whopper without cheese or mayo, and have pretty much a just as healthy food as a 6-inch sub FOR A HELL OF A LOT LESS.

Also note this only applies to the SEVEN subs that Subway has that are actually low-fat...FOR ANY OTHER SUB, the results would be MUCH MUCH HIGHER.

So next time you go to Subway, don't order a foot-long sub with cheese and mayo, because you might as well have saved three bucks on a Big Mac or Whopper.
