Overview of Web Site |
This web site will provide you with an insite into the Greek culture in America. When looking at the history of the U.S., it is essential to look further into the cultures of the countries that America is comprised of. The topics mentioned include the immigration of the Greeks into America and how the Greeks assimilated in the U.S. The web site also contains a sampling of the more prominent Greek Americans in America as well as links to further explain impact these Greek Americans have had in U.S. history. When discussing Greeks, it is essential to mention their religion and the impact that it has on their daily lives. One way that Greek Americans have held onto their culture while incorporating it into a social event for the rest of the U.S. is through their festivals. These festivals are centered around Greek folk dancing. I chose to put together a farly comprehensive on the Greeks in the U.S. because I couldn't find one on the subject. It took a few months of surfing the web, to come to this conclusion. I found numerous sites promoting festivals, Greek American clubs, the Greek Orthodox Church, and some prominent figures in the Greek American community, but this web site ties all these aspects of the culure and its impact on American life into one collection. I must recognize all the websites that I have given links to for giving me a better understanding of the topics discussed. Furthermore, three books I read gave me substantial background information as well as important dates and facts that I've incorporated into this website. The books are as follows: Mazacoufa, Demetrius. The Story of Greeks in America. Atlanta, GA: Argonne Press, 1977. Moskos, Charles C. Greek Americans: Struggles and Success, 2nd ed. New Brunswick, New Jersey: Transaction Publishers, 1989. Psomiades, Harry J. and Alice Scourby, editors. The Greek American Community InTransition. New York, New York: Pella Publishing Company, 1982. Furthermore, some of the information mentioned in the website is from my personal observation of being raised in the Greek American community. I have been attending the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation in Atlanta since I was born and I've been a member of Troupe Hellas, Atlanta's Greek Folk Dance group, since I was 5 years old. |
