Approximately 15 miles long, Lake Patzcuaro is situated 150 miles west of Mexico City. It is nestled amid volcanic peaks at 7000 feet. Days are comfortably warm. Nights may be chilly. The lake is famous for it's "pescado blanco" (white fish) which are still caught in traditional butterfly nets. Center of the ancient "Purepecha" empire, the lake is surrounded by towns specializing in crafts. Hilltop pyramids at Ihuatzio and Tzintzuntzan offer panoramic views. The famous island of Janitzio is a short boat ride from Patzcuaro. Climb the steep island to the statue of the revolutionary priest Morelos. A mural inside the huge statue recounts the life of Morelos as you spiral up toward the lookout in his raised hand. |
