She wore a pair of shimmery jeans and a plain pink tank top.
"You look nice,"Isaac commented when he picked her up.
She smiled."Thanks. You look nice, too."And he did, in her favorite outfit to see him in, baggy jeans and a slightly snug black T-shirt. The same outfit had made Taylor look scrawny, which he was, but that was besides the point. Isaac just looked good.
The restaurant he took her to looked so familiar. She couldn't figure it out. The way the tablecloths were the exact shade of red as in the paintings. Plain black plates. Sheer black glasses. She loved them, that she remembered from before. She just didn't know when before.
Isaac's hand was resting on the edge of the table, and Jade reached over and played with the ring he always wore on his middle finger, turning it round and round."Do you remember when my dad gave you that?"she asked.
"Of course."He laughed."The only time I didn't want to tell someone they'd mistaken me for Taylor."
"You just wanted the ring."
"Well, duh. Then he started talking to me about sex. After that I was quick to say I wasn't Taylor."
"My dad was always the bluntest person,"she said softly.
"Yeah."
Isaac looked at Jade nervously, suddenly afraid talking about her dad would make her sad. She seemed fairly content though, smiling at him over the table."You're happy,"he said with amazement.
She blushed."I feel a little better today."Something about spending that time with Isaac and his family had made her feel so much less alone. So loved. Seeing how much they still cared about her, it made her happy. Taylor had been the only person that she'd thought loved her. Now she was able to see that not only had he loved her, but so had his whole family.
The restaurant. She'd first met them there. She'd been so terrified, convinced that they would hate her. When the night was over she had been amazed at how easy it had been. Diane and Walker were the nicest people she had ever met in her entire life. This was where she had first met Isaac and Zac, too.
"Ike, do you remember being here?"
The expression on his face told her that it was the exact reason he'd brought her to this particular restaurant. She should have known. Isaac had a talent for remembering the right thing at the right time.
She could feel her feelings for Taylor slipping away. Jade still loved him with every breath in her body, but she could tell that she was moving on. Parts of her mind tried desperately to hold onto the memories, but the future was controlling her now. The future she would have without Taylor.
And that scared her more than anything she'd ever been through in her entire life.
Even more than losing Taylor the last time.
