Revenge could have been sweet, but sadly I come across Tay's diary before I could find Ike's. Taylor has never been good at hiding things.
If they didn't keep diaries this wouldn't happen, you know. Why they feel the need to write everything down where they know their little sister will find it is beyond me, however, I'm always happy to have everything written down. It makes snooping so much easier.
I started with the most recent entry, skimming backwards, looking for something of interest.
"Boring, boring, boring,"I muttered."Really boring, ooh!"I had hit the jackpot.
"What are you doing?"Avie asked all too loudly.
I slammed the diary shut and attempted to hide it behind my back."Nothing."
She stared at me for a minute."Yes, you are. What were you reading?"
I subtly placed Tay's diary on the dresser behind me and grabbed what felt like another book beside it."Just this,"I said, pulling out the book, which's title was something about a cowboy and a baby. Oh no! A Harlequin romance novel.
That would be how I ended up grounded.
"I've told you a million times I don't want you reading those,"Mom lectured me for what felt like the millionth time that day."
"But, it wasn't mine,"I tried to protest.
"I don't care! You shouldn't have been looking at it in the first place."
Boy had I gotten myself in a bad situation. I could either tell the truth, that I had really been snooping in Tay's diary, a story which Mom would definitely know was true, or let her think I've been sneaking trashy romance novels. What could possibly be in there that was so bad anyway? Probably just lots of kissing and gross stuff like that.
Instead I just apologized profusely to Mom, and noticed the guilty look on Zac's face when he saw what Mom was waving around as she lectured. I made a mental note to use that later.
Even though I was grounded, I still knew what was in Tay's diary anyway. That alone I could use for years.
"So, Taylor, how's Jennifer doing?"I asked casually the next day at the dinner table."Ike, pass the peas."
Taylor choked on his water.
"Jennifer?"Mom asked."Taylor, who's Jennifer?"
"Nobody?"he said, making it sound more like a question than an answer.
I smiled."I thought Jennifer was your girlfriend."
Dad raised his eyebrows."Girlfriend? Since when are you allowed to date, Jordan Taylor Hanson?"
"She's eighteen, too,"I added.
"Jessi!"Taylor hissed, giving me a death look.
"I think your mother and I need to have a talk alone,"Dad announced, standing up."Isaac, clean Mackie up when he's done eating."
"I'm going to kill you,"Taylor said, giving me a death look once Mom and Dad were out of sight.
"That was low,"Zac agreed, quickly scraping his peas into the trash can while nobody was looking.
I raised my eyebrows."Look who's talking, Mr. Harlequin Romance Novels."
Zac almost dropped his plate."What are you talking about?"
I just smiled.
"Do you hate us all or something?"Isaac asked. He had just lifted a very messy Mackie out of his highchair and I could see a mashed potato handprint already on his back.
"No."
"Then why are you torturing us?"Taylor asked.
"Yeah!"Avie added, not really sure what we were talking about but sure that she wanted to be included.
"Cause it's so easy,"I said, giggling. Just then, Mom and Dad made their reappearance."Taylor, we'd like to speak to you alone,"Dad said as Mom spooned out another serving of peas to Zac, with instructions to eat them this time.
Taylor glared at me as he was led into the living room. I had a feeling I should watch out for a while until he cooled off. His temper was something to be careful of.
"I'd leave him alone for a while,"Isaac suggested.
I considered that for a minute."Nah."Where was the fun in that?
