Chapter Two "One Step Closer"

"I find the answers aren't so clear..."

Bethany groaned as she stared at the day's classified section. As usual, there was nothing appealing, and even when she called on the less-than-appealing jobs, those jobs always seemed to be filled. Either that or she wasn't qualified.

Things were just going from bad to worse. If she didn't get five hundred dollars by the end of the day, she was going to lose her apartment. Her air conditioning had already been shut off, along with the electricity. The only reason the phone still worked was because Jason had paid that.

But Jason refused to help further. He'd only payed that so he could keep in touch with her.

The phone rang.

"Good Morning, Jason,"Bethany said with a sigh. He called every morning, at eight on the dot, just to check up on her.

There was a short silence."May I speak to Bethany Morgan, please?"

"This is her."The voice was male, but one she didn't recodnize.

"Bethie?" She wrinkled her eyebrows."Yeah?"No one had called her that for years. Not since her dad died. Not since her mother remarried and her new stepfather told her it was too juvenile.

Things sure had changed since she had been a Bethie.

"Are you gonna go?'

Lily stared at Bethany entreatingly. She'd brought over that weeks Want Ads magazine and Bethany had told her of the Hanson's offer.

Bethany shrugged."I don't know."

"Why not?"

"It just seems too good to be true."Traveling all over the world, getting payed more in a week than she'd made all year, it felt like a scam. Even when she knew it wasn't.

Lily gave her a look."Bethany, you have to go. You don't have a choice."

As if Bethany didn't already know that. The rent was due. She didn't have a job or any money. Her savings was gone. This offer should have been a dream come true. But it wasn't.

"Lily, there was reason I stopped working for the Hansons,"she began."and it was a big one. It all depends on whether I can get past that. Truthfully, I don't think I can."It had just been so long since she had seen them.

"The decision is made."Lily tossed the paper and the Want Ads in the trash."If you don't go, you'll be homeless. Its as simple as that. Whatever it was, get over it. I just can't do anything for you anymore. You need this job."

She was right. It had been almost six years since what had happened. If he could forget it, surely she could. The time had come to face the past.

Plus, she had no place else to go.

Taylor recieved the phone call, and when he walked into his parents hotel room, he looked as if he was in a daze. The whole family had gathered there that evening.

"She's coming,"he announced.

"Yes!"Jessi shouted.

Isaac gave her a strange look."Why are you so happy? You're too old for a babysitter. She's gonna be watching Mac and Zoe and helping Avie with her schoolwork."

"So?"Jessi asked."She'll be here all the time, and I'll have to spend time with her. I remember her from when I was little. Bethie was the nicest baby sitter we hever had. Now she'll be more like an older sister. I could use one of those. Zac gives bad love advice."

Zac didn't notice that last jab. He was too busy painting Talia's toenails. Taylor thought it was disgusting, but he wasn't the one doing it, so he ignored them like the rest of the family.

"When is she coming?"Diane asked.

Taylor handed her the flight information."She'll meet us in London tomorrow night."

"So soon?"

"She said her lease was running out."

Walker raised his eyebrows. He'd done an internet check on the girl before offering her the position and knew just how bad her financial problems were. From what he'd read, their offer had come just in time for Bethany Morgan. He didn't understand why her family hadn't stepped in before that. Her stepfather was a prominent businessman back in Tulsa. He could easily spare some money to help out his wife's daughter. Jason Morgan, her brother was just as well off financially. He was a lawyer in Oklahoma City.

Not that any of that mattered. They needed a nanny, and Walker was happy that they had gotten one, no matter why she needed the job.

Zac was the only family member not happy about Bethany coming. In fact, he was dreading it. There was just too much of a past, too much to forget.

Too much to keep from Talia.

"Zaccie, aren't you coming?"Talia pouted.

He should have been excited by the prospect of heading down to the hot tub with his girlfriend, especially with her in that miniscule bikini, but all he could think of was what had happened.

And did she still hate him.
