Nick leaned over the railing of the balcony, breathing heavily. He must have been an idiot to dance with her. He whould have just left it alone, just walked away.
He didn't even hear her when she came out behind him.
"I'm so sorry, Nick,"Maree whispered."I never meant to hurt you."
Nick stared out at the city,"Well, you did."
"If I hadn't been so stupid this could have been our wedding."Maree sat down on a nearby bench."We'd just been talking..."
"Zac told me."He'd bombarded Nick the second he heard about his and Maree's fight. Nick had even considered talking to her, but he'd been too angry."Where did you go afterwards?"
Maree looked up in surprise. She hadn't expected that.
Nick turned slowly towards her."I always wondered."
"Jade knew."
"I never wanted to ask her. She would have told me I was being an idiot, which I already knew. My sister is brutally honest."
"She always was."That was one of the reasons Maree had become friends with her.
They stared at each other. This was the first time they had spoken in three years.
"I went back home."
"To your mom's house?"She'd told him she'd never go back there.
"No."Maree smiled."I found my Dad."
Nick grinned."Really? I'm so happy for you! You always wanted to meet him."
"Yeah."
There was a silence.
"I should get back inside,"NIck said softly.
"Okay."Maree turned to leave.
"Maree?"
She stopped."Yeah."
"I missed you."
