Selecting and choosing your breed of rabbit is the most important decision you will make. Your choice of breed effects many things, such as the size of your cage you will have to build, the amount of grooming and feeding you will have to provide.
Read and reasearch as much as you can and look for places where you can look and learn about different breeds, so that you are better able to decide upon what breed better suits you, and your lifestyle.
With over forty regignized breeds to choose from, you will deffinatly want to take some time to get more familier with some.
As soon as you start to learn about different kinds of breeds, you will also hear about crossbred rabbits. These are rabbits that have more than one breed in their family background. This can offer a very uniqe and special rabbit.
None the less, having a purebred rabbit to start with might be a better idea. Here are just two of the many advantages of having a purebred rabbit rather than a crossbred rabbit..
* It costs just as much to house and feed a purbred rabbit as it does to feed a crossbred rabbit.
* If you want to show your rabbit(s), why not raise rabbits that will qualify to exhibit a greater number of shows?
A great way to begin learning about all of the different rabbit breeds is to pay a small fee and become a youth member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association (A.R.B.A.) This organization has quite a bit to offer. The membership includes, a guidebook that includes pictures and a written description of every breed availible. There is also the House Rabbit Society You can check out their page on rabbit breeds.
