Note:  The information provided below was compiled from the various sources listed in the Bibliography Record Section so a complete bibliography of this section can not be furnished.
    The main purpose of this biography is to provide the reader with as many facts as possible in as little space as needed in order to describe the notable event.
    If you have information in regard to Poe and/or "The Raven" that isn't listed in this brief bio section, and would like to share it with the rest of the world, please email me (with the letters "EAP" in the subject line) along with:

Edgar Allan Poe
(b. January 19, 1809 - d. October 7, 1849)


1809 - January 19. Edgar Poe born to David Poe and Elizabeth Tubbs Arnold (both Actor's by occupation) in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He's the second of three children (Henry William Leonard and Rosalie being his siblings).

1810 - Edgar's father disappears from the family. It is unknown as to what happened to him.

1810 - December, 20.  Birth of Poe's younger sister Rosalie.

1811 - December 8. Edgar Poe's mother dies of Tuberculosis in Richmond, Virginia. Edgar was only two years old.

1812 - Edgar Poe becomes the ward of wealthy Richmond, Virginia tobacco merchant, John Allan and his wife Frances. It is here where Edgar Poe picks up his middle name although the Allan's never officially adopt Edgar despite his want for them too.

1815 - June 22. The Allan's, along with six year old Edgar, sail to England aboard the ship Lothair. Note: The slowing of trade between America and England had a significant impact on the Virginia Tobacco Merchants and so John Allan, along with his family, moved to England to take care of unsettled accounts which arose as a result of the War. Allan was obligated to set up a foreign branch in order to re-establish connections and settle the accounts. As an added incentive, he had family in Scotland and took the opportunity to visit with them during his prolonged business trip.

1815 - July, 28. The Allan's dock at Liverpool, England after a 36 day journey from America. (An average travel time for that era.) - They remain in England for nearly 5 years (returning July 21, 1820.)

1816 - October 19. "General" David Poe (Edgar's grandfather) dies. William Henry Leonard Poe sent to Mr. Henry Didier to be helped and cared for. Edgar's grandmother soon becomes paralyzed and goes to live with Maria Poe Clemm.

1817 - July 13. Maria Poe marries William Clemm Jr. They have two children. Virginia and Henry.

1818 - September 10. Henry Clemm born to Maria Poe Clemm and William Clemm Jr.

1820 - July 21. After a 36 day journey aboard the ship Lothair, the Allan's dock in New York where they then proceed to return to Richmond, Virginia, with eleven year old Edgar and their young friend James Galt, after spending nearly five years in England.

1822 - August 15. Birth of Virginia Maria Clemm (Poe)

1825 - March 26. William Galt dies (John Allan's uncle) He leaves Allan a considerable fortune.

1826 - February 8. William Clemm Jr. Dies. (Husband of Maria Poe Clemm.)

1826 - February 14. Poe enters the University of Virginia. Forced to withdraw because John Allan would no longer finance his education due to a quarrel between he and Edgar. The quarrel was said to be started because of Edgar's gambling debts. Edgar, in turn, blamed Allan for his debts to due Allan's lack of personal funding to Edgar.

1827 - Published 1st volume of verse Tamerlane and Other Poems. It "was a pamphlet about 40 pages." The author's name was not printed on the pamphlet but rather the credit was given as "By a Bostonian." (Israfel, pp.164-165.)

1827 - May 26. Edgar Poe enlists as a private in the U.S. Army as Edgar A. Perry for a 2 year term.

1829 - January 1. New Years Day. Edgar rises to the rank of Sergeant Major of the first Regiment of Artillery. It is the highest rank for a non commissioned officer, just behind 2nd Lieutenant. (He was stationed at Fort Independence in Boston Harbor.)

1829 - February 28. Frances Keeling Valentine Allan dies at the age of forty-four.

1829 - April 15. Edgar honorably discharged from the army so that he may attend West Point Military Academy.

1830 - June. Edgar gains admission to West Point as a cadet.

1830 - October 5. John Allan marries his second wife Louisa Patterson. Marriage takes place in New York.

1831 - January 28. Edgar court-martialed at West Point for various offenses such as disobedience of orders and absence from academic duties. He was found guilty on all charges and Cadet E.A. Poe was to be dismissed from the service of the United States. (Poe was recommended to leave by March 6th so that his next paycheck could come through to pay for outstanding academy fee's. - after all is paid, he is left with twenty-four cents.) This whole affair was a revenge tactic against John Allan for his lifelong mistreatment of Poe. Edgar was actually an "A" student in most of his studies.

1831 - February 19. Edgar leaves West Point before March 6th and journey's to New York City.

1831 - August 2. William Henry Leonard Poe, Edgar's brother, dies of tuberculosis at age 24.

1831 - November 7. Edgar arrested for failure to pay an $80 debt (some of which Edgar claimed was his brother Williams' debt, incurred for medicines and doctor's during his illness.) He spent Christmas in jail but was released just before the New Year.

1834 - March 27. John Allan dies, leaving Edgar nothing in his will.

1835 - September 22. Edgar Poe marries his cousin Virginia Maria Clemm. She was thirteen years old. (An actual marriage license exists for this date. A copy of the license can be found in the book "Israfel.") Please see the bibliography section for book details.

1838 - July. The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym is published in New York.

1845 - October 24. Edgar acquires The Broadway Journal.

1845 - November. The Raven and Other Poems is published in New York.

1846 - January 3. Edgar loses control of his company The Broadway Journal.

1847 - January 30. Virginia Maria Clemm Poe dies of Tuberculosis at the age of 25.

1848 - September 21. Edgar goes to Providence, Rhode Island to meet Mrs. Sarah Helen Whitman and proposes marriage to her. She denies his proposal. She is the object of which his Poem To Helen is written.

1848 - November 4. Edgar Travels back to Providence, Rhode Island to again propose to Sarah Helen Whitman but instead travels on to Boston where he attempts suicide by overdosing on the drug laudanum.

1848 - November 14. Sarah Helen Whitman promises to marry Edgar conditionally.

1848 - December 15. Marriage contract drawn up between Edgar and Sarah Helen Whitman. The conditional contract put all of Whitman's fortunes out of his reach, which insulted Poe.

1848 - December 23. Sarah Helen Whitman calls off the wedding due to her belief that Edgar could not be reformed in his drinking habits.

1849 - September 27. Edgar begins his journey to New York, first boarding a  4:00am steamer which was destined to go Baltimore. From there Edgar was to go to Pennsylvania to Edit a volume of poems for a Mrs. Loud. Her husband John Loud, was to give Edgar a hundred dollars for doing so. Then he was to resume his journey to New York.

1849 - October 3. Poe was found, by a man named John Walker, semi-conscious and dressed in torn clothing in a tavern called Gunner's Hall located in Baltimore, Maryland at approximately 3:00pm EST. This is the first time Edgar's been seen since September 27th.

1849 - October 3. Poe admitted to Washington Medical College located in Baltimore, Maryland at 5:00 pm where he was tended to by Dr. John J. Moran.

1849 - October 7. Poe dies at 5:00am on a Sunday at the age of 40 at the Washington Medical College in Baltimore, Maryland where he was first admitted. Cause of death: Unknown.

1849 - October 8. Edgar laid to rest on a Monday about 4:00pm EST in the family plot (lot 27) in the cemetery of the old First Presbyterian church in Baltimore, Maryland.

Post Poe Events


1849 - October 9. Maria Poe Clemm "Muddie" while waiting for Edgar's return home, learns of his death in an obituary.

1849 - October 17. Poe and Elmira set this date as their wedding day.

1874 - July 21. Rosalie Poe, sister of Edgar, dies at age 64 in Washington.

1884 - Elmira Shelton Royster was said to have been "supposed to have been engaged to Edgar Allan Poe," and, according to resources, she was. In 1884, in a meeting with Elmira (then aged 75) Dr. John Moran, (The physician who tended to Poe during his final hours) said that Elmira told him "Yes, there had indeed been a formal engagement." (Midnight Dreary,pp.128.)

1888 - Elmira Shelton dies at the age of 78.
 

Pre Poe Events


1784 - June. Marriage of Elizabeth Arnold Smith (an actress) and Henry Arnold (England.)[Poe's maternal grandparents]

1787 - Birth of Eliza Arnold, Edgar Poe's mother (England.)

1789 - (or early 1790) Death of Eliza Arnold's Father. Eliza was two.

1790 - March 17. Birth of Maria Poe. (later to become Maria Poe Clemm) Aunt of Edgar, Mother of Virginia Maria Clemm (Poe's future wife.). Her parents were "General" Poe and Elizabeth Cairnes. [Poe's paternal grandparents]

1796 - January 3. Eliza arrives in Boston, Massachusetts with her mother, at the age of nine on a ship by the name of "Outram."

1798 - Elizabeth Arnold (Smith), Edgar's grandmother, dies.

1802 - July. Eliza Arnold, Prior to marrying Edgar's father, David Poe Jr., marries Charles Hopkins.

1805 - October 26. Death of Charles Hopkins in Washington. He was approximately 20 years old.

1806 - January. A few month's after Charles Hopkins dies, Eliza marries David Poe Jr. (Edgar's father.)

1807 - January. Birth of Edgar's older brother, William Henry Leonard Poe.

1807 - September 14. William Henry Leonard Poe left to live with his paternal grandparents "General" David Poe and his wife Sarah in Baltimore, Maryland. Sometime thereafter William was adopted by them.
