RID Prowl (Mach Alert)

Retail: $9.99

A U.S. re-release of the Japanese Car Robots toy

Color Scheme= A mainly white and black Lamborgini police car with gold, silver, yellow, and transparent red (For sirens and tail lights).  AND- an Autobot symbol painted on the hood!  Whoo hoo!  The Autobots are back!  The Transformers, More than Meets the Eye, The Transformers, Robots in Dis...er...I mean, on with the review.

Vehicle Mode= As stated before, Prowl is a Lamborgini police car (And according to DVD's sources, Lamborginis are actually used as police cars in Japan and Hong Kong).  No robot bits are visible in this mode, reminding us yet again that Transformers can truly be robots in disguise.  RID Prowl is faithful to the original Prowl in terms of his alt mode and name, but elsewhere it's all new.  The wheels roll really freely- except he has a tendency to go right when you push him.  His car doors retain the Japanese writing found on Mach Alert, and although I can't read Japanese- I'm guessing they say POLICE.  But that's just guessing.  Anyway, in car mode Prowl also has exhaust pipes sticking out the back and rubber tires- a nice touch.  Ah, the wonderful days of die-cast construction and real rubber tires.  G1 shall never be matched.  But RID is getting pretty close.  On a side note, Prowl's tires have writing on them as well.  They say: Transformers 2000.  Very cool.  And if you look inside the windows of the car, you'll see that his feet fold up to form bucket seats.  But that's not all-
GIMMICK:
Prowl comes with missle launchers (Cyberjet style) that fire, well, fire.  That is, his missles look like jet fire exhaust.  You take his spoiler and lift up the ends to reveal pegs that you can place the launchers onto- and they become thrusters.  Kinda silly looking, but it has definite playability.

Robot Mode= In this mode, Prowl's car doors become Rhinox-type leg covers while his rear spoiler/trunk section becomes a shield, and the rear wheel areas become shoulderpads.  His missle launchers attach on his right arm to become arm-mounted cannons.  He has a red transmetallized Autobot symbol on his chest (Hold your applause) and the exhaust pipes on the side can flip up as chest-mounted cannons.  Prowl's main colors in this mode are white and black- but this time with some added blue on his hip and leg sections.  The shield is permanently mounted on his left arm, and while it gets in the way, it is a nice addition.  Prowl's missle launchers/thrusters can also be attached onto his back sirens- forming a jetpack.
His robot head looks very sleek and aerodynamic with a bicycle like helmet and yellow eyes.  Overall, a nice tribute to the original G1 Prowl, but updated with the ball-joint technology and sleek styling of the Beast Wars era.

Comments= Prowl is the first addition to my collection in a new era of TF's- Robots in Disguise!  The toy is an excellent addition to any Transformers collection, and brings happy memories back to us G1 fans.  I don't know what the RID show will be like, but if it's anything like the toys- it'll be More Than Meets the Eye!
