Mellon Collie and the
                   Infinite Sadness
Do you own this Smashing Pumpkins album?  If you don't and you are unsure if you should get this, read the following and hopefully I'll make you think one way or another.
Okay, first I will get my bias out of the way.  I think this is one of the greatest rock albums ever released.  Why do I think this?  Well, for one thing, its got the hard stuff that can contend with the likes of Slipknot (via "Tales of a Scorched Eart")  or possibly any other band out there (via "Bodies" "XYU" "ZERO"  "Bullet With Butterfly Wings")  Yet, there are the love songs ("Lilly" "Beautiful" and many others)  And the painful rememberance of childhood ("To Forgive" and "Galapagos")  Billy Corgan's song writing prowess really shines through every song, I truly believe that.
Do not think that I'm a die hard Pumpkins fan.  No, I only on Machina and the album this column is dedicated to.  I am one of the handful of people that like "Machina".  I do not blindly recommend this in the torrent of my would-be zelousness.  No, I believe in an object manner that this is one of the greats.
You've probably heard one of these songs:  Zero, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Thirty-three, 1979.  Did you think any of them were good?  Then you will find that there are 3 or 4 more like that song on the album.
To be honest, I didn't like all the songs at first.  But as I matured (give me a break, I got the album when it came out, I was in 6th grade) and life threw me its tortures, I related and accepted the songs for what they said and sounded like.  Needless to say, Mellon Collie got me through the tough times.
So, if you like a good balance of songwriting and music, and you don't mind a litle profanity mixed in (the good deal of it is on the second disc, there is only one cuss-word on the first disc.)  Then you will like this album.  For those of you who don't accept this and desire only hard stuff or only soft stuff, perhaps you should borrow it or get it from the library.
