SHORB - research from MSM Archives

Shorb is said to have been spelled "Schorb" originally but has been found under a variety of spellings: Shorp, Shorpen, Shurb, Sherb, Sherp, Schorp, etc. It is said to have been pronounced "Sharb".

The ancestors of the family apparently arrived in this country in 1749 as the Shorb name is found on the register of the Ship "Priscilla" from Rottendam and Cowes, England, arriving in Philadelphia in September 1749. Three names are listed together as follows:

The following article appears in the History of Cumberland and Adams County, Pennsylvania published in 1886 by the Warner-Beer Co. of Chicago.

" . . . The ancestors of this old pioneer family left Lorraine when it was attached to France, because they loved the old German Fatherland and language better than the French. Three brothers, supposed to have been John, Jacob and Anthony, immigrated

to America and settled in Pennsylvania. One kept a hardware store in Hanover, York County, buying his stock in Germany and making seven sea voyages for the purpose. One settled in York County near Hanover, and the other near Goshenhoppen, Berks County, and there they farmed and their descendents lived for many years. John Shorb, the brother who settled in Hanover, married a lady by the name of Fricker. They were married about 1760 and had the following children: Anthony, Jacob, John, and Mary.

Joannes SCHORB was born about 1698 in Koblenz, Rheinland-Pfalz, (Germany). He died in 1781 in York Co., PA (Adams Co. after 1800). He was buried in 1781 in Edgegrove (Conewago Twp.), Adams Co., PA at Conewago Chapel. He has Ancestral File number 1BCP-FN4. He was also known as Joanni Casparo Schorbin or Schorp.

He was married to Annae Mariae SITTERS about 1715. Annae Mariae SITTERS was born about 1700 in Koblenz, Rheinland-Pfalz, (Germany). She has Ancestral File number 1BCP-FPB. She died in York Co., PA (Adams Co. after 1800). Joannes SCHORB and Annae Mariae SITTERS had the following children:

Joannes Casparus SCHORB was born in 1715. He was christened on 28 Apr 1716 in Koblenz, Rheinland-Pfalz, (Germany) at Liebfrauen Katholisch. He died before 1724.

Emmanuel SCHORB was born about 1720 in Koblenz, Rheinland-Pfalz, (Germany). He was christened on 26 Oct 1721 in Koblenz, Rheinland-Pfalz, (Germany) at Liebfrauen Katholisch. He was baptized into the LDS church on 28 Mar 1986 in the Boise, Idaho LDS temple. He was endowed on 30 Apr 1986 in the Boise, Idaho LDS temple. He was sealed to parents on 1 May 1986 in the Boise, Idaho LDS temple.

Joannes "John" SCHORB was born about 1722 in Koblenz, Rheinland-Pfalz, (Germany). He was christened on 9 Jan 1724 in Koblenz, Rheinland-Pfalz, (Germany) at Liebfrauen Katholisch. He was a carpenter in 1737/38 in Hoffen, Alsace, Germany. He immigrated on 11 Sep 1749 to Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA on "Priscilla". He resided in 1760 in Hanover, York Co., PA. He died on 18 Jul 1801 in York Co., PA (Adams Co. after 1800). He was buried on 19 Jul 1801 in Edgegrove (Conewago Twp.), Adams Co., PA at Conewago Chapel. He has Ancestral File number ZOL2-MD. He was also known as Joannes Jacob Schorb. He was also known as Hans Jacob Schwob of Hoffen, Northern Alsace.

Catherine FRICKER was born on 13 Apr 1727 in Wintersigen, Basell, Switzerland. She died in 1784 in York Co., PA (Adams Co. after 1800). He died on 1 Dec 1851 in Frederick Co., MD. He has Ancestral File number ZOL2-PQ. He was buried in Emmitsburg, Frederick Co., MD at St. Anthony's Shrine Cemetery (behind chapel). He was also known as Jacobus Schorb (in church records).

He was married to Elizabeth FINK (daughter of Conrad FINK OR FINCK and Catherine) in 1785 in Edgegrove (Conewago Twp.), Adams Co., PA at Conewago Chapel. Elizabeth FINK was born between 1760 and 1765 in Emmitsburg, Frederick Co., MD. She died on 28 Dec 1794 in Hanover, York Co., PA. She has Ancestral File number 1C26-3HF. John A. SHORB was born between 1788 and 1796 in Pennsylvania. He served in the military in 1814 in War of 1812. He died on 31 May 1870 in Maryland. He was buried in Jun 1870 in Emmitsburg, Frederick Co., MD at St. Anthony's.

He was married to Maria Magdalena KREITZER about 1820. Maria Magdalena KREITZER was born about 1798. She was buried in Emmitsburg, Frederick Co., MD at St. Anthony's. John A. SHORB and Maria Magdalena KREITZER had the following children:
