A videoclip fic to "Jesus to a Child" by George Michael. This was written as an homage to Talya Firedancer's Gundam Wing fanfic trilogy, "Darkness and Redemption" and contains spoilers for the story. Heero and Duo are separated and believe the other to be dead--this follows the events of episode ten of the TV series. Shounen ai, but no sexual content.
kindness in your eyes
I guess you heard me cry
[Duo lies huddled up alone on his bed. Heero walks in quietly and sits down next to him.]
you smiled at me
like Jesus to a child
[Heero gently sets his hand on Duo's shoulder. Duo reaches up to cover his hand, and rolls over. His eyes widen as he sees Heero's expression, and he smiles softly.]
I'm blessed I know
[Close up, their hands join together, then suddenly slip apart without warning.]
heaven sent and heaven stole
[Wing Gundam explodes in a fireball. Duo, frozen in horror, can only watch mutely.]
you smiled at me
like Jesus to a child
[Heero's face appears through the smoke as he and Duo lock gazes.]
and what have I learned
from all this pain
[Closeup of a trickle of blood oozing down a pale inner arm, pooling in a cupped hand.]
I thought I'd never feel the
same
about anyone or anything again
[Duo, face deathly pale, lies back in the bathtub, closing his eyes.]
but now I know
[Scene dissolves to the two pilots standing together.]
when you find a love
[Duo holds out a hand to Heero, who tentatively takes it. Their fingers intertwine, clasp hard.]
when you know that it exists
[Duo smiles. Heero lifts his other hand to Duo's cheek and caresses it, returning his own faint smile.]
then the lover that you miss
[Duo, alone in bed, shifts restlessly in his sleep, his mouth twitching anxiously.]
will come to you on those cold, cold nights
[He dreams of Heero, who snuggles up behind him and hugs him with fierce protectiveness, stroking his hair gently. Duo's face relaxes and he shifts into deeper sleep.]
when you've been loved
[Dream-Duo rolls over to face his lover, and they kiss, holding one another closely.]
when you know it holds such bliss
[Dream-Duo laughs joyfully as Dream-Heero tugs his braid in a teasing gesture. Dream-Heero gazes at Dream-Duo, his eyes sparkling with love.]
then the lover that you kissed
[Dream-Heero's face gradually drains of color. Suddenly frightened, Dream-Duo clutches his lover hard to him.]
will comfort you when there's no hope in sight
[Dream-Heero's face fades into a featureless blank and he dissolves to smoke in Dream-Duo's arms. Duo sits up violently in bed, gasping in horror.]
sadness in my eyes
[Heero stands with his usual cold expression. A closer shot shows him with an uncharacteristically wistful look, quickly masked when Duo bounces up and slings an arm around him.]
no one guessed, well no one tried
[Heero impatiently brushes him off. Duo gives him an "I know better" look.]
you smiled at me
like Jesus to a child
[Duo grins and hugs him again--and this time, Heero doesn't push him away. He almost smiles.]
loveless and cold
[Against a grey, featureless landscape, Child-Heero runs. His eyes are wide, searching for something he doesn't understand.]
with your last breath you saved my soul
[As Child-Heero runs, a figure in black, his face hidden in shadow, appears. A long, brown braid drapes over his shoulder, the only spot of color in the scene. Child-Heero stops in his tracks in front of Death.]
you smiled at me
like Jesus to a child
[Death bends to pick up Child-Heero, cradling him tenderly in his arms. Child-Heero closes his eyes and rests his head against Death's heart, a peaceful expression on his face.]
and what have I learned
from all these tears
[Heero lies wounded on a pallet, his eyes closed. His hand twitches, restlessly searching.]
I've waited for you all those years
[Duo and Heero lie together, Duo sleeping. Heero half-sits up to watch his partner, then very lightly traces Duo's braid with his fingertips.]
then just when it began
[He bends over to press a kiss to Duo's face, then draws back, afraid of waking his lover.]
he took your love away
[Heero sits on the windowsill in Duo's room, staring blankly at the sunset.]
but I still say
[Injured Heero tosses restlessly in his sleep, reliving his near-death in Wing Gundam.]
when you find a love
[Dream-Heero presses the self-destruct button.]
when you know that it exists
[The world explodes around him.]
then the lover that you miss
[Dream-Heero stands in a grey, featureless landscape, looking around wildly.]
will come to you on those cold, cold nights
[He starts walking, then breaks into a run, but Death is nowhere to be found.]
when you've been loved
[Exhausted, Dream-Heero drops to his knees, bowing his head.]
when you know it holds such bliss
[A familiar hand touches his shoulder from behind him.]
then the lover that you kissed
[Dream-Heero, not needing to look up, puts out his hand to cover Dream-Duo's.]
will comfort you when there's no hope in sight
[Dream-Duo/Death lifts Dream-Heero to his feet. The two join hands and walk together into the grey mist.]
so the words you could not say
I'll sing them for you
[Duo looks out the window at the rising sun, his expression showing a new acceptance of life without Heero.]
and the love we would have made
I'll make it for two
[He holds the jeweled cross Heero gave him in his hand for a long moment, then sets it down on the sill next to him.]
for every single memory
has become a part of me
[Dissolve to Heero at the same window, picking up the cross and gazing at it in his hand.]
you will always be...
[The faces of the two boys appear, translucent against a clear blue sky. At first at opposite sides, they move across to intersect, meet briefly, then continue past each other to fade away.]
...my love
[Dissolve to both young men facing each other. They step forward slowly with outstretched hands, then come together in a deep embrace.]
well I've been loved
so I know just what love is
[Heero sinks on Duo's bed and holds his pillow, lightly tracing a strand of Duo's hair on the fabric.]
and the lover that I kissed is always by my side
[Across the room, in the shadows, Duo holds out his hand to Heero in supplication.]
oh the lover I still miss...was Jesus to a child.
[Heero curls up on the bed and clutches the pillow to him in a tight embrace, shutting out both dreams and reality.]
