Who is the scarlet pimpernel? |
The non-initiated can call it a predecessor to Zorro: the swashbuckling adventure/romance about a British nobleman who rescues condemned French aristocrats from the guillotine during the Revolution. The story originated from a series of novels by Baroness Orczy. (etexts can be found at Blakeney Manor or Sir Percy's Place.) |

The pimpernel was the subject of several films over the span of the last century, most notably Leslie Howard/Merle Oberon in 1935, and Anthony Andrews/Jane Seymour in 1982. The Scarlet Pimpernel became a Broadway musical (and fans will tell you, a DAAM good one) by Frank Wildhorn and Nan Knighton which ran from 1997 to 2000, and toured the country until 2001. |
