Who is the scarlet pimpernel?
The non-initiated can call it a predecessor to Zorro: the swashbuckling adventure/romance about  a British nobleman who rescues condemned French aristocrats from the guillotine during the Revolution.  The story originated from a series of novels by Baroness Orczy. (etexts can be found at Blakeney Manor or Sir Percy's Place.)
The pimpernel was the subject of several films over the span of the last century, most notably Leslie Howard/Merle Oberon in 1935, and Anthony Andrews/Jane Seymour in 1982. The Scarlet Pimpernel became a Broadway musical (and fans will tell you, a DAAM good one) by Frank Wildhorn and Nan Knighton  which ran from 1997 to 2000, and toured the country until 2001.
