Review:
How appropriate is this album? Just when Lenny Kravitz completes a whole
list of songs that everyone loves, he brings out a greatest hits album. Perfect
timing. This is a great idea, as otherwise we would have to buy all of his albums
to get the variety of songs that he has released. This album is really needed.
And what better way to start off an album then with "Are you gonna go my way?"
This is a wonderful song with a killer riff, truely a classic rock track. "Fly Away"
is again a song with a hugely catchy riff, which is followed by the led Zeppelin
style riff of "Rock and roll is dead" and establishes that this album is a real rocker.
"It ain't over 'til it's over" adds a lovely blend of motown to the album. "Mr. Cabdriver"
shows Jewish born Lenny Kravitz tackling racism in this 12 bar blues style song
with the lyrics "Mr. Cabdriver, don't like my kinda' skin". Then "American women"
hits us, although this song wasn't actually written by Kravitz he does a pretty good
job of spicing it up. "Always on the run" features Slash (of Guns n' Roses fame)
and the 2 guitar riff is really rocky, which by this time we have come to expect from
Kravitz. Although I'm not too keen on the track "Black velveteen" it is a dance track
and as I don't like dance it doesn't score too high with me. I'm sad to say that the
rest of the album consists of soppy ballads/love songs. Give us some more rock
Lenny. Overall this album contains quite a range of style, rock, motown, acoustic
and dance. Although it is rather overpowered wtih the acoustic songs, whereas it
really should be overpowered by rock songs. Might I compare Lenny Kravitz to
Jimi Hendrix? They certainly sound alike vocal-wise, but Kravitz's guitar playing is
no way as good as Hendrix's was. As this album has quite a good mix of styles
and some memorable songs.
Other Features:The photo of Lenny on the front showing his chest and
tattoo is just gorgeous, hey, I'm female, I'm allowed to fancy him! Inside is a huge
range of photos, which is just what I want! Including a nice one of him bearing his
chest. It also includes the lyrics to one of his songs (Why only one?) "Again"
Maybe this song means something special to him?
