FREE Medical Clinic
Medical people on our mission trips run FREE Medical Clinics for Ft. Liberte an surrounding areas. They work in (sometimes condemned) buildings without electricity, water, or even windows, using only medicines and equipment they can carry with them. Medicines (med's) and equipment are donated from people shopping for "extra's" at the local drug store, to national pharmacutical companies making large donations of samples and overstocked items.
The dream of having a building with permanent equipment, sinks, lights, and storage areas that can be locked and ready for the next team is becoming a reality. A plot of land was purchased between the orphanage and the Tecnical Training School for the future clinic. Americans and Haitians poured the foundation for the new clinic in March 2000. Work will go on as funds become available. Donations may be designated "clinic". (The Clinic is open for business!!! More details later...)
Some of the trained volunteers that have worked at the clinic are: medical doctors and nurses, dentists, eye doctors, physical therapists, normal jr. high-college students who may want to become medical professionals, and big, clumsy guys like myself that were needed as a "bouncer" on the last day of clinic to help control the flood of needy Haitians.
There is no medical insurance coverage for the poor in Haiti. There are few hospitals that can help. The hospitals are said to only treat those Haitians with shoes because if you have shoes, you are higher on the social ladder and might have the money to pay for help.
