Review

What can I say except that I was very surprised by how great this episode was. After last week's disappointing episode She, I'm glad that we're back on track with a great episode that captivated me throughout the hour.
When I saw the preview for this episode, I thought that this episode would just be another rehash of a child possessed by a demon. Boy, was I wrong. The episode was great in that it kept you guessing who was in fact the real demon. When you thought you knew, the writers made a complete U-turn and went the opposite direction. At first we believed that the demon was the father, due to his suspicious treatment of Angel. Could the father be abusing the children and the mother? We find out after they eat the brownies that the son, Ryan is the one who is possessed by an Etheros demon. But what makes this such a great story is that throughout the hour, we see the horror that the parents are going through. For years they have had to live with the belief that their son was a killer and now Angel informs them that it's not Ryan, but a demon. The parents are overjoyed, because it means that all the bad things that have happened over the years is not due to their son, but due to a demon. At first both parents are willing to do anything for Angel to get the demon exorcised, but the mother begins to break down as Ryan calls out to her for help. Despite all the bad things that have happened, she believes that they have made a fresh start in L.A. and could go back to a normal life without expelling the demon. She finally agrees to do what Angel says after almost being killed by the demon. What finally makes this episode so great is the final twist that the boy was evil or had no soul without the demon possessing him. Despite the brief glimpse of hope that Angel provided, they must in the end accept the fact that their boy is not an innocent child.
Other things in the episode? What's with everyone's father being shown as an evil overlord? In this episode, it's revealed that Wesley's father didn't have much confidence in him as a child. We all know that Cordelia's father was a criminal who embesseled money. Angel's father was abusive as we will see in next week's episode.
I liked the character interaction in this episode between Angel and Cordelia, and Angel and Wesley. We continue to see the friendships of these three people to grow. Angel in the beginning accidently calls Wesley Doyle and Angel finally reveals to Cordelia the grief that he is feeling over Doyle's death. They have a brief but touching heart-to-heart. Then there is the relationship between Wesley and Angel. The Etheros demon reveals to Angel that Wesley is going to kill him, however, Angel knows that Wesley is not planning on killing him but is willing to if he goes evil. A sign of things to come?
One final note. The scene in the church with the nun was really spooky and chilling. I thought it was great that the nun could tell that Angel was a vampire and she had no fear of him, but believed that her faith in God would protect her!
