I have always had long, thick hair, and I have had a perm since ? Because of the length and the thickness of my hair, styling was always a long and tedious process. Even after spending lots of time combing and styling, my curls would fall by the end of the day.
So instead I usually wore my hair in a ponytail. Then I would hear the comments. " GIRL if I had hair like that I would..." or " Why don't you wear your hair down more often? " or some other comment that meant they could do better.
I would usually tell them to let me know when they were available, and I would bring this head of hair right over and let them have at it. Some people actually took me up on this, BUT only ONCE. After that, they understood my situation. I am not complaining. I am trying to illustrate my hair woes that led up to going natural and eventually to Sisterlocks.

I have never been one to sit in the salon. I usually did my hair at someone's home, at their convenience. LOL I still would end up spending a number of hours.
ANYWAY... My mother was very instrumental in my going natural. She found a salon that specialized in doing natural hair in the Maryland/D.C. area. On my next visit home, I made an appointment to get my hair done. The process they used was very similair to a perm, in that it made your hair press out straight. I purchased their products and bought them home, since they do not have a salon in the Austin, Tx. area.
Well, the process took almost all day. 10 min. for this, 45 min. for that.. etc. Then my mother found another company that had a lot fewer steps involved, and the end result once again was super straight hair. Well, because of the lenght of my hair, it still took forever to press out my hair. Not to mention the excessive heat placed on my hair. |

My search for a stylist led to Greg Day. I spoke with him on the phone and he explained his opinion of the best options. Locks or afro. Choose based on your lifestyle, and of course budget.
Well I wasn't liking either one of those options, because my image of locks was not pretty. I had almost written him off. But, I must admit that he had planted a bug in my ear, and I spent an entire day on the internet looking up locks. I saw a FEW pictures that I could deal with, but not many. And the debate over upkeep were confusing and cantradicting.
I went back to a book I have on natural hair by Pamela Ferrell and found a picture of Sisterlocks. Hey isn't that the term Greg used on the phone? These locks look GREAT. I made an appointment for a consultation and test locks. After discussion with my husband, mainly over the expense, I made an appointment to get them. On Saturday, September 16, 2000. I completed my journey. I have arrived at FREEDOM HAIR. |
