Vitropolis
A shining dome in the middle of the desert. The people of this strange and fabulous place live below ground in large bunkers. Above ground is a large dome that is their sole reason of excistence.
Vitropolis gets its power from a sunlight driven steam engine (technology originating from the Great War). The entire place is in fact one big sunlight collector. The glass dome redirects all sunlight towards the central crystal pillar. This pillar focuses the light into one big searing hot beam that is directed at a huge water reservoir, deep underground. The steam coming from this process moves a couple of giant turbines who in their turn move various fans that provide the place with cool fresh air. The air underneath the dome is very humid and almost unbearable during daytime. This, in combination with the focused rays of light that go from the dome to the pillar, creates spectacular rainbow effects.
In times of danger, like the attack of a Great Worm, they fire beams of searing light to defend themselves. This has proven to be a devastating weapon. If you can kill a worm, what more do you want.
Their diet consists of fungi, molds and various vegetables. Underneath the dome seaweed-like vegetables are grown to provide in the additional need of food. These small vegetable fields are worked by special drone spiders. Furthermore, giant spiders are used to move around in the desert. These spiders are specially bred for their jumping skills and ability to sense the approach of a worm with the sensitive hairs on their legs.
They worship a god called Illuman who protects their city and their way of life.
