Interview: Jen @ Cloth Menagerie
. |
Recently, I had a chance to stop and ask skinner extrodinaire Jen, from the Cloth Menagerie, a few questions about her Sim site. She is obviously a talented skinner....Just go visit her site to see! Thanks Jen for the great interview!
---------------------------------------------
Q. When did you first get the idea to do a Sims site?
A: My husband bought the Sims for me shortly after it came out. I started playing a little then learned there were sites to download from. Not too many yet at that time. I found out how to make skins when I stumbled across a couple of tutorials, and thought it would be fun. After doing a few I decided to use my geocities space that had been sitting around to put them up. That was almost 2 years ago now, will be 2 years at the end of March.
---------------------------------------------
Q. What do you use as inspiration when designing your skins?
A: I little bit of everything really. I've designed some skins from cloths I own, others from things out of magazines. Some are just outfits that I think would be neat. Once in awhile I find a background texture I like that lends itself to a certain outfit and that starts me on a skin. I did the set of Rocky skins because I've been so involved with the movie for a long time. Once in a great while I do a skin because it was requested, and I thought the idea they had was neat. I've also done some skins based on signature dolls my friends use at forums. My inspirations come from all over.
---------------------------------------------
Q. Has your experience with costume design given you any insight into creating Sim skins that you think other skinners may not have?
A: Other then the fact that I've been designing costumes and clothing for 9 years, not really. I think my only advantage there is that I've had more practice on real bodies in the design process, but anyone can makes skins with practice.
---------------------------------------------
Q. What is it like for you to run a Sim website? What are the best and worst parts of running your own site?
A: Some days running my own site is great, others, I want to just junk the whole thing. I run my site myself, and have never had anyone else work with me on it, so sometimes it can be a lot hanging over my head, and I have to take a break from it to keep from getting burnt out. The best part of running my own site is getting letters from people who really like what I've done and want to see more. They are the people I'm doing the site for. The worst part, well....I have a FAQ on my site to help answer questions for people, but invariably I get at least 10 mails a day asking questions that are already answered right there.
---------------------------------------------
Q. Which skins are you most proud of and why?
A: I am proud of all of my skins. Each one takes a lot of work, but I am most proud of my more recent skins. I know I have improved over time, I am at the point where I do a skin, and can actually say when I get done "Yeah, I'm happy with that."
---------------------------------------------
Q. What types of new skins can Sim fans expect to see soon?
A: I don't know. It all depends what I feel like when I sit down at my computer. Right now I am working on adding Hot Date versions to the site, but I'm really not sure what I'm gonna do next...I guess they'll just have to stop by and see :)
---------------------------------------------
Q. What are some of your favorite Sim websites and why?
A: Hmm, that is a hard question. I hardly ever play the game anymore (shhh..don't tell anyone) but I am still a download junkie. When I do play I mostly build stuff, play it for a couple of sim days and then tear it down and start over. I love Mail Order Sims, Wretched Sims, Simgoddesses, Ophelia's and 7 Deadly Sims because they are all very picky about their quality. I can't stand seeing objects that aren't at the right angle, or bleed yellow or stick through walls.
---------------------------------------------
Q. What is the most unusual event you've seen happen to one of your Sims?
A: Well, I was actually playing not too long ago to check out the new stuff in Hot Date and test some skins and I sat my sim down to eat. I got impatient with the game and left the table, then they brought the meal out. I couldn't get the sim to sit back down so I had him order food again and they sat him at the table where he old meal was still sitting. This time I actually waited for the food to come out and when the waiter sat the plate on the table my sim disappeared. I found him in the next room standing behind the bar. That was very strange....
---------------------------------------------
Q. Is there anything special or unique you would like the Sim fans reading this to know about you or your site?
A: I guess the most unique thing about me is that I am a costumer, and have been sewing and making costumes and formal wear for years and years. So I try to bring some of that to my Sim site with costumes and formal wear like I would make for real.
