Review: The Cloth Menagerie.
I have been to this site numerous times since it is mentioned so often in forums. I personally don’t recall downloading anything so this trip – again, one you shall all take with me – will be more of that of an objective reviewer. The obvious thing I first notice about this site is the great layout (and colors – no blinding the viewer) and easy navigation. A lot of sites can’t even do this part adequately. So hopefully, as I move through the sections, the layout will not prove to be deceiving. Obviously this is a site for skins (hence the name!) – they have a long list of sections (Bordello Women, Bordello Men, Fashions Women, Fashions Men, Fashions Children, Hair Fashions, and Costumes – UH OH – I think by now we all know how I feel about costumes) all neatly laid out for you on the home page. They also have a skin tutorial, links, a guestbook (ALWAYS NICE – again, easy to way to get a hold of the skinners), and a FAQ. So far pretty basic but again, they get a 2 for the layout. Now lets hope all the pretty design work didn’t go to waste. Just going down the line I entered the Bordello Women at first and suddenly it hits me as to why I never download from this site – in order to get an outfit, you have to download 2 or 3 files. This is something I do not enjoy. I have slow enough bandwidth as it is. Also this page suggests that the outfits are risqué when they clearly are not. Infact I would call them pretty much ugly and unoriginal. The one BONUS here is that if you do happen to like this particular female lingerie some are made for Hot Date. Again, this is nice since right now there are few clothing items for Hot Date downloading. Moving onto the Men’s Bordello I am a little bit more impressed – the first three sets of PJ’s are very nicely done and unique (burgundy, green and purple silk pajamas). They all have dragons of some type on their backsides, very nice. The other skins on the page…not liking. Although – here again, another bonus, they do match some of the female lingerie so if you want your couples to match here is the place to be downloading. Now bite my tongue – in the female fashions (dresses/specialty) they have some GORGEOUS gowns. And I mean GORGEOUS. Some off the shoulder form fitting gowns, some GREAT MODE dresses (meaning larger woman), a fabulous MODE skirt…these are great female skins. AND YES – I AM DOWNLOADING SOME!!! The next fashion page is all about mini’s – yes, miniskirts. Not too original but they are well done. OH – and a very cute Chinese dress (CAN I REQUEST A LONG VERSION?!?). So far, I am enjoying the skins on this site (minus the lingerie page). Next we have shorts and pants…something that is rare in my SIMS world (don’t ask me why, I just never put the women in pants!). More MODE outfits! MELLIE LIKEE!!! But wait, can I ask what the skinners were thinking with the snakeskin jumpsuit? Very tacky, but I am sure very popular. Sadly enough I am none too impressed with the male, children or hair fashions. Nothing unique and some of the skins are down right hideous (REMEMBER THIS IS JUST MY OPINION!). Obviously these skinners know what they are doing – all you have to do is look at the female fashion pages to see that but something happened between the making of the female fashions and the male/children/hair fashions. In the costumes general area…again, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??? They have a wicked H.R. Giger woman skin – wicked meaning amazing and some great tuxes but the rest (fig leaves???) – no, would never go into my game. To be honest neither would the H.R. Giger skin but it is done brilliantly. Moving on to door number two we have "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" skins…UGH. I love this movie but…who uses these in games? Even the well done ones? These are not well done (and to put them on children???)…if you are a fan of "RHPS" find these skins somewhere else. The fairy costume section – although nicely done is another thing I wouldn’t place in my game…the skins that is. They are nice skins however, so if you enjoy having fairies in your game I would recommend traveling to this site. They only have 6 (3 men/3 women) but they all coordinate and again, well done. And finally door number three, costumes special features…I have no idea what this means, but am about to find out. OH MELLIE LIKEE!!! VERY NICE SKINS HERE (with the exception of the Ruby Ridge PJ’s)! Upon reading they somehow correlate to Signature Dolls and members of two different clubs. VERY LOVELY! And just for the record, they have a very nice link page. Numerous links – some popular sites listed and some unknowns. So all and all…well, my advice either stick mainly with the Woman’s skins and forget about doing the rest OR put as much time and imagination into the Men/Children/Hair Fashions that you have the Women’s. We need more children’s skins in the game so it would be nice if a site like CM – where the skinners obviously have great talent – could put more time into Children’s Fashions. I honestly think if CM did this - made Women’s and Children’s Fashions their main focus it would be a superb site (but WAIT – don’t get rid of the Costumes Special Features section!). (3)
