High'n'Mighty EP - Twist

Okay, let's get this over with. I think that 99.9% of UK-based garage bands are complete and utter shite - a controversial opinion I know, but I'm fed up of hearing about how The Mystreated are gonna change the face of pop music as we know it and are the greatest songwriters, etc, etc. Thankfully, there's one new combo in town that puts the lie to my previous statement. These boys 'n' gurls know that 'to rock' is an absolute measure of a band's validity and that the cut of your trousers is an incidental matter. On this, their debut release, guitars fuzz with the right amount of abandon, lyrics are heartfelt and sincere, drums pound away like the Roto-tom was never invented and everyone has a mighty fine time. In fact just one spin is enough to send you off back to your Sonics albums with a clear conscience. No dodgy cover versions here. The future of teenage rock and roll is assured...

Dig It! - France

The Sires are from London and are on the Twist label, which has two guys running it, one in Germany and one in the Channel island of Guernsey. Fuzzy guitar and female vocals on the powerful, catchy, angry garage punk opener make a statement before the arrangement of the second song stamps out its presence and authority with a more staccatto, abrupt rhythm. A nice innuendo of a title opens the flip side and is again an attractive, likeable piece - and, like all the stuff so far, executed at a mid to upper tempo - before they slow it down for Crossed Hearts, which marks a return to the female vocals to take us home. I quite like this band's material.
