RULERS OF YOUR HEART - Twist Big 14 LP

Kudos to the guys at Twist for allowing the UK's finest garage band space to create an album the way they wanted - at home, in their own studio, on their own terms. The result is a standard twelve tracker with more kick than a rhino and enuff variation to ensure that nobody gets bored, a real rarity in the trash world. Anyone who's been privileged enough to witness the Sires live show will be familiar with the superior firepower of the combo - with singer Domi's Pauline Murray-ish vocals riding across the fuzzed-out crunch of Andy's guitar and solid backbeat provided by bassist Cyril and drummer Richie - and i'm glad to say the cut and thrust of the first side (yep, this is vinyl kids!) succinctly captures their teen appeal. However, like most things in life, this is a game of two halves and the album's flip takes the Sires' way out into uncharted territory, with a fuzzed-up stab at Irma Thomas's 'Ruler of My Heart' kicking off six tracks of pure mayhem. From the outrageous fuzz bass of 'Revelations from', through the MC5-ish rave-up nightmare of '(Call Me) Little Miss Understood' to the awesome 3/4 time fuzz fest of the closing 'Spanish Girl' this is 100% righteous garage punk for the Millennium and beyond - no shit!

...well, well, well...a 60's-style band, from the UK...I guess...very muddy lo-fi...too muddy fer headphones...but the singer...sheeeshhhh...this chick...man, what a fucking killer voice!!!!!!!...strange style indeed...I can't really compare her to anything...sometimes it's hard to find her under all the mud, but with the right drugs she comes through like an angel....and as a matter-of-a-fuckin-fact she's a looker too...as well as the rest of the band...a very clean looking bunch...good enough for tea, or maybe even a blow job...or a butt fuck...god, what a beautiful voice...

There's more 60s fun with The Sires' debut 'Rulers of Your Heart' album on Twist Records (TWIST BIG 14, distributed by SRD), former home of the Mystreated and Stewed. As you'd expect, this is all about pure 60s trash and is recorded in lovely mono. What you get is two sets of six tracks. 'No More' and 'Never Talk to Strangers' are probably my faves on side one, while on the other side they totally let rip on '(Call Me) Little Miss Understood' and 'Feel No Pain' and close with a goodie 'Spanish Girl'. The LP was recorded and produced by Andy Sier and the Sires in Shoreditch and mastered at Abbey Road Studios. It's a follow up to The Sires' two 45s - also released on Twist. Backstage at one of the dates of their recent Australian tour - which had sold out on the strength of their third consecutive number one album - top Aussie pop group YOU AM I encountered one particular young fan who they just had to tell Twist/The Sires about. 'He was wearing a home-made t-shirt of The Sires', says drummer Ross, and 'he was much more excited about the fact that we knew The Sires than he was hangin' backstage with us... and so he should be!'.

It was the mid 90's when The Sires were finally launched on an unsuspecting British public. With their fuzzed out garage-trash-punk with a huge nod to Seattle's Sonics, The Sires have gone from strength to strength. Their first two releases added fuel to the fire, while their debut album - following the acquisition of The Nuthins former drummer - has seen The Sires elevated to arguably one of the best authentically sounding exponents of 60's garage music in the world today. It's sleazy, it's slightly grimy and at times primal, yet The Sires take on garage punk is arguably some of the best most will ever get to hear, live or on record - or both! Delightfully trashy, and we wouldn't want it any other way.
