INTRODUCTION
TO NEWSGROUPS:
Well as you may know already (you should know if you are here already)
there could possibly be a Phantom newsgroup created very soon. This
has been initiated by certain members of the Phantom community,
namely Oyvind Bjugan who is a regular visitor to our Phantom's World
Forum. Even though the newsgroup doesn't exist yet, we still need
your help in getting one created.

Normally,
judging from the amount of posts and general interest about
the subject in question, the newsgroup administrators will overrule
or grant someone's plea to create a unique newsgroup. That is
why we need LOTS of discussions. The administrators will not
even consider it if there are not enough messages. |
SOFTWARE:
You will firstly need to download or locate a newsgroup reader on
your computer. Some of the better newsreaders for Windows include:
Forte Free Agent (free) Download

Microplanet Gravity (my favourite) Download
If you have a Windows computer you may also have the Micros$ft Outlook
Express Newsreader. This is NOT recommended as it is a very annoying
and hard-to-use product. The Newsreader which comes with Netscape
isn't too bad though but strictly follows the same principals
as the Netscape Email reader, which is also a bit harder to use.
SETTING IT
UP:
All of the aformentioned software will have very similar options
to set it up. Firstly you will need to enter the details of your
local service providers host. (If you're not sure just ring them
up and ask for the News, or NNTP server). You will also need to
provide a reply email address (DO NOT enter your normal email address
but use a hotmail address or somthing, other wise you leave yourself
wide open to ALL kinds of SPAM).
After you have
done this, normally it will download a list of all available newsgroups.
This may take a fair while because at the moment there are around
60,000 + different newsgroups.
Once you have
the list, browse through to "alt.comics.alternative" and
then SUBSCRIBE to it (normally there is a button to do this). Once
you've done this you may start to post messages.

If
you click on the following link: alt.comics.alternative
AND you have a default newsreader which is properly setup,
it should try to subscribe you to the newsgroup. This will
only work with some software! |
WHY?
Alright, once there are enough different threads and messages in
general, the powers-that-be will hopefully grant permission for
the new newsgroup to be created which will be SOLELY for Phantom
related discussions. Pretty cool huh?

UP FORTE FREE AGENT (for beginners) |

Go
to web
site here |

Click
"Download Free Agent" |
|
3.

You
may want to read some of topics on this page but otherwise.... |

Click
"Free Agent Download" |
|
5.
|
Choose
the location closest to you with the right version for
your computer and click the link. |

6.
|
Click
"Run this program from its current location" (Will still
download to your computer) |

7.
|
Wait
for the status indicator to reach 100%, the file is around
1Mb so it may take a little while. |

8.
|
If
the programme doesn't automatically install, find and
run the program fa16-121.exe (16-bit) or fa32-121.exe
(32-bit) to install Free Agent 1.21. |

9.
|
Follow
the instructions provided by the installation program.
The same program will allow you to install a new version
of Free Agent or to update an older version. |

10.
|
If
this is a new installation of Free Agent, the first time
you run Free Agent, it will prompt you for the information
it needs to operate: |

a)

Accept
the user agreement |
|
b)
|
Type
in the correct details (if unsure contact your ISP) |
|
c)
|
The next step needs you to be conected to the internet
make sure of this then click "Yes" |
|
d)
|
Please
be patient, downloading all newsgroups will take a while
since there are 40,000+. |

e)
|
Scroll
down and find alt.comics.alternative and then double click
it to SUBSCRIBE |
|
f)
|
Click
"Get all message headers" |
|
g)
|
Right
click the newsgroup and select the SUBSCRIBE option |
|
h)
|
Once finished you may start reading and posting messages.

|
To
subscribe to more groups just double click that particular
group as well. |

F1 to display the online help. You may want to start by
reading the Getting Started topic. To view this topic,
click on the phrase Getting Started on the Agent Contents
page or search help for "Getting Started." |

The
second time you run the program, it will ask you for permission
to register you as a user. |
