COMMAND DECISION: MISSION BRIEFINGS

A Gear Krieg Scenario in Three Parts by Scott Lynch

"We must not judge everyone solely on their qualities as a soldier, or else we should have no civilization."

  • General Erwin Rommel

  • British Briefing

  • Engagement I: "Move to Contact"
A German armored probe is moving west along a low stone escarpment, in an attempt to penetrate your lines just outside of Sidi Rezegh. You may place your forces along this escarpment and on rough salt flats just to the south of it, and you should remain aware of the possibility of a pincer attack from the south.

  • Engagement II: "Fuel Raid"
One of your armored cars has spotted a German truck convoy racing through the thick of battle less than a mile from several of your forward elements. Obviously, these trucks must be carrying vital supplies to troops and vehicles at the front, and destroying them could give you local superiority in one swift blow. The truck convoy has an escort, and is speeding toward two rocky ridges held by German guns, but your force will be able to interpose itself between the convoy and the ridges. You will have Germans on two sides, but the bulk of the enemy on one of those sides should be the vulnerable trucks.

  • Engagement III: "The Sieve and the Sand"
The Germans have taken an escarpment parallel to one of your own, separated by a clear sandy expanse about three-fourths of a kilometer wide. Each side is staging on their ridge and has the task of driving the other from theirs. No complications or attacks from other directions are expected for the next several hours, although weather forecasters warn of the possibility of a dust storm blowing up soon.

    German Briefing

  • Engagement I: "Move to Contact"
You have been ordered to send an armored probe west along a stone escarpment toward a known British position. Expect British forces to be both above and below the stone heights. You will be able to stage your forces in two different locations, attacking from the east and the south in a pincer movement.

  • Engagement II: "Fuel Raid"
One of your supply convoys has strayed too far toward the front, and the British have moved to cut it off and destroy it. The loss of the convoy will imperil your actions for the rest of the day. It is racing toward a pair of ridges held by your troops, both of which would be ideal places for heavy guns. Between the convoy and the ridges lies the intercepting British force.

  • Engagement III: "The Sieve and the Sand"
You have taken an escarpment parallel to a similar British position, separated by a clear sandy expanse about three-fourths of a kilometer wide. Each side is staging on and around their ridge and has the task of driving the other from theirs. No complications or attacks from other directions are expected for the next several hours, although weather forecasters warn of the possibility of a dust storm blowing up soon.
