"Grendel this monster grim was called,
march-riever mighty, in moorland living,
in fen and fastness; fief of the giants
the hapless wight a while had kept
since the Creator his exile doomed."
From Beowulf, translated by Francis B. Gummere, 1910

Morale All German units are Veteran. The Russian unit is Legendary.
Terrain and Setup Divide the map into thirds. The central area should be an open moor, perhaps with a few scattered bits of wreckage. Each end of the table should be covered in fairly dense woodland, each of which is a setup area for one of the sides. To reflect the monstrous nature of the Russian machine, it should be placed on the table after German setup, and it should have the Initiative. |
The advance of Operation Barbarossa has been held up just outside Smolensk in the Western Military District. Rumors of a "monster" have reached OKW. It is said that a single Soviet tank, crewed by fearless Russian fanatics, has breached the axis of the German advance and raised hell behind the lines, leaving dozens of burning hulks in its wake before vanishing back into the mist-draped forests. Needless to say, OKW is extremely displeased with these ridiculous rumors and has dispatched an armored task force consisting of two reinforced platoons to put an end to the disturbance.
This scenario is Medium Mission Priority for the Germans and High Mission Priority for the Russians
This scenario as designed does not achieve TV parity. The single Russian unit still outweighs the TV of the thirteen German units. This is for aesthetic reasons. Using the "Beowulf" option described below brings the scenario closer to TV balance.
