Characters: April, Beckie, Gwyn, Cathy and Shannon
(Beckie and April and standing at April's locker talking)
April: How was math class today?
Beckie: I couldn't concentrate. He kept staring at me.
April: Who, the teacher?
Beckie: No, the guy that sits across the room. You know, the guy that looks like Chris O'Donnell.
April: No way, he is so cute. I think he likes you.
Beckie: No, I don't think…..
April: Shh, here he comes. (both turn into the locker. Beckie takes mirror as if to fix her hair and follows him down the hall)
Gwyn: (enters) Oh yum, did you see that guy? He is so fine.
Beckie: Yeah, I know. He was staring at me in math class today.
Cathy: (enters)Hey guys did you see….
April/Beckie/Gwyn: Yeah we did. He is so..
Beckie: Gorgeous.
April: Beautiful.
Gwyn: Magnificent.
Cathy: What are you talking about?
April/Beckie/Gwyn: THAT GUY!
(he turns around and everyone but Cathy turns to the locker and tries to look busy)
Cathy: I was talking about the audition sign up sheets for the school play.
Gwyn: We all signed up for tonight. Did you?
Cathy: Yeah, I did. So far it's only us auditioning.
Beckie: (surprised)It is only us?
Cathy: For tonight.
Beckie: Oh.
April: Are you guys singing?
Cathy/Beckie/Gwyn: Yeah.
April: Great! Me too.
Shannon: (enters) Come on Gwyn, we have to get to biology.
Gwyn: See you later! (followed by a chorus of "byes")
April: Bye!
Beckie: Bye!
Cathy: Bye!
Gwyn: Bye!
Shannon: See ya! (Shannon and Gwyn exit)
(Shannon and Gwyn walk in discussing the auditions)
Shannon: So Gwyn, do you have your monologue picked out for the audition?
Gwyn: Why?
Shannon: I was just wondering. Maybe I could give you some few pointers.
Gwyn: Pointers? From you? I don't need any help.
Shannon: Okay, just asking.
(Beckie, April and Cathy enter)
Beckie: Asking about what?
Gwyn: Oh nothing. Shannon just thinks that she is better than everybody else.
Shannon: Hey, I never said that!
Beckie: Some times you don't need to say it Shannon.
Shannon: What do you mean by that?
Cathy: Well, if you are such a great actress, then you should know all about body language.
April: Hey! Fighting is not going to get us anywhere.
Beckie: Yeah, she's right.
Gwyn: Yeah, we should be focusing on the auditions.
(long pause)
Beckie: Oh it's my turn. (walks into the audition room)
Shannon: (sarcastically)Good luck. (Beckie shuts door, Shannon whispers to the other girls) She needs it.
Cathy: Shannon!
Gwyn: Don't stick up for her.
(girls hear opening music)
April: Hey listen! Beckie is going to sing.
(girls move up against the door - long pause)
Cathy: Oh my….
April: That's my song!
Shannon: Your song?
Gwyn: No! That is my song! She is singing my song!
April: Your song? That is my song! I have been practicing for two weeks.
Shannon: Well there is only one solution.
Cathy: What?
Shannon: You all have to pick another song because I am singing it too.
Cathy: No way!
Gwyn: You pick another song.
Shannon: Well pick another song, or drop out of the auditions.
April: If we dropped out that would be great for you right?
Shannon: You guys…competition…right!
April: Whatever.
Beckie: (enters) That was so easy! They loved me, they really loved me!
Cathy: We'll see about that won't we? Now if you will excuse me it is time for me to wow them with my talents. (exits)
Gwyn: I got more talent in my pinky finger.
April: I wonder if she will sing and dance at the same time?
Gwyn: Cathy sing and dance at the same time? She can't even walk and chew gum at the same time.
Shannon: At least she can act.
Gwyn: What are you saying?
Shannon: All I'm saying is that I don't know why a ham actor like you is trying out.
April: If you want to see a ham actor, look in the mirror.
Gwyn: (softly) Just try not to break it.
Shannon: What did you say?
Gwyn: Nothing.
Beckie: (starts to sing) Stop! In the name of love. Before you break my heart…
All: Shut up Beckie!
Beckie: Okay. (sits up against the wall)
Cathy: (enters) What an audition! You might as wall all go home, because I just got the part.
Beckie: Well, when I auditioned they said….
All: Shut up Beckie!
Beckie: Okay!
(A few days later. April is by her locker, doing homework. One by one the girls enter. Shannon is the last one to enter and she notices that the lists are up)
Shannon: Hey, the lists is up. (they run to the list)
April: Get out of my way!
Gwyn: I can't see, stop pushing!
Beckie: Move!
Cathy: You can't see? I can't see!
Shannon: Everybody calm down.
(pause - see the list - standing in shock)
All: (gasp) I can't believe it.
(another pause - still in shock)
Shannon: Betty? Betty got the part?
April: Betty?
Gwyn: She is such a suck up.
Beckie: Betty only got the part because she is the favorite.
Cathy: This is so unfair.
Gwyn: Hey look! (points to the list)
Cathy: We are all make-up artists.
April: Girls, I think that it is great that none of us got the part.
Shannon: You're right. Our friendship is much more important than this stupid play.
(all start to walk away from the list)
Beckie: I just got a good idea. Something we can do together.
Cathy: What?
Beckie: We can screw up Betty's make-up.
All: Yeah!
