Slifer the Sky Dragon
ATK X000 DEF X000

Type:
Divine-Dragon
Attribute: Light
Owner: Yugi Muto

The heavens twist and thunder roars, signaling the coming of this ancient creature, and the dawn of true power.

Slifer The Sky Dragon is one of most feared beasts of all time, one of the three Egyptian God Cards - the most powerful cards in Duel Monsters. Created by Maximillian J Pegasus, and then sealed away to protect the world from its terrible power, Slifer is the Egyptian God of Light and Darkness. Only those with a connection to the millennium items, ancient relics possessing incredible power, may control an Egyptian god. By the soul of the controller Slifer may be Good or Evil, and is capable of taking the life of a duelist unlucky enough to stand in the way of its wrath.

Slifer has many special abilities, but none more terrifying than it's second mouth. Whenever another monster is put in front of it, Slifer will automatically use it's second mouth, and attack it, sending it down by a large quota of its power. Slifers power is measured by the number of creatures you have established with you. It gains power from it's allies.

This monster requires three tributes, and is considered a Normal Summon.

'X' stands for the number of cards that the controller of this card has in their hand.
e.g. If player has 6 cards in their hand, Slifers ATK and DEF will be 6000.

Slifers Special Ability

Slifers Second Mouth/Lightening Blast

Each time your opponent summons a monster face-up into the field, Slifer automatically attacks it with its Second Mouth. If it is in Attack Position, decrease its ATK by 2000 points; if it is in Defense Position, decrease its DEF by 2000 points. This effect only lasts the duration of one turn. If the ATK or DEF of a monster is reduced to 0 by this effect, destroy that monster immediately.

Slifers attack is known as Thunder Force.

Trap cards

God cards are immune to the effects of trap card's.
Traps that are activated before, or after a God Card is summoned to the field have no effect. That includes cards such as Gravity Bind and Waboku.

While the card’s are in the owners hand they are vulnerable to the effects of trap cards such as 'Lightforce Sword'.

Magic Cards

Magic card effects last for 1 turn only.
This Includes card’s that designate more than one target such as 'Swords of Revealing Light'. The exception to the 1 turn rule are cards that sacrifice, or change the ownership such as 'Change of Heart' or 'Soul Exchange', the effects of those card’s may not target a god card on the field.

While the card’s are in the owners hand they are vulnerable to the effects of magic cards such as 'Exchange'.

A magic card that targets a monster may destroy a god card, however Raigeki and Dark Hole (and other cards that target more than one monster on the field) are ineffective.

Monster Effects

Monsters may target god card’s with an effect that reduces their attack and or defense strength. They may also stop an attack or change its battle position.
However a monster effect may not destroy, remove-from-play, send back to the opponents hand or change ownership of a god card. e.g. Hane-Hane, Man-Eater Bug and Cyber Jar.

Monsters that switch control of opponent’s monsters when sent to the graveyard, like 'Dark Necrofear' can not target a god card on the field. The effect of a card such as 'Beast of Gilfer' would be allowed as it simply reduces the monsters attack.

The effects of monsters on God Cards last only for 1 turn.

While the card’s are in the owners hand they are vulnerable to the effects of monsters like 'Morphing Jar'.

These rules also include your own monster, magic and trap cards.

Additional Information on Slifer

Spellbinding Circle/Hexagram Curse

In both the manga and anime, in a duel between Yugi Muto and Marik Ishtar (Mime Control), yugi used the Trap Card 'Spellbinding Circle' (Hexagram Curse) to stop Slifers attack, and decrease its attack strength by 700 points. Although the effect of 'Hexagram Curse' was negated after 1 turn, it did affect Slifer which seemed to indicate the god card's were not immune to all traps. However, this is not the case.

The reason behind this contradiction seems to be because the author of Yu-Gi-Oh! (Kazuki Takahashi) somewhat considers 'Hexagram Curse' as a Spell Card in the card game. Although the phrase 'Trap Card' appeared on the 'Hexagram Curse' card in the manga, and all characters referred to it as a trap card, it was still considered a Spell Card in terms of gameplay. Whether this contradiction is caused by that miswritten phrase, or if Kazuki Takahashi forgot about what was indicated on the card, or even that 'Hexagram Curse' is in fact a Spell Card with Trap properties is unknown.

Similar problems have appeared before in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. In the double duel between Yugi, Jonouchi and the Paradox Brothers, one of the brothers used 'Release Spell' (Negate all Spell effects received from your opponent) to destroy Yugi's 'Hexagram Curse' card (still indicated as 'Trap Card'). The picture on Release Spell was almost identical to that of 'De-Spell', however both these two cards have different names and effects in the real game. Unlike in the previous case, the contradiction did not appear in the anime, as the card used instead to destroy Spellbinding Circle was 'Remove Trap' (Destroy 1 face-up Trap Card on the field).

Slifers Second Mouth and Obelisk the Tormentor

During a battle between Yugi Muto and Seto Kaiba (Clash in the Coliseum), Obelisk the Tormentor is summoned to the field while Slifer the Sky Dragon is in play.

Slifer's second mouth (Lightening Blast) attacks automatically and reduces Obelisk's ATK by 2000. At the end of the turn Obelisk's attack strength was returned to normal.

History of the God Cards

When game designer, Maximillion J. Pegasus went to Egypt, he found stone tablets of battles fought in ancient times, known as Shadow Games.

He based a Collectible Card Game on these stone tablet recordings and called it Duel Monsters. However, he also created 3 unimaginable cards based on one of the stone tablets engravings.

Each of these 3 mythological beasts represented the polarity of the universe. Obelisk represents light and darkness. Slifer represents good and evil. Ra represents earth and sky. However Pegasus regretted ever making these 3 rare cards, because as if with the power of the actual deity living inside them, all three possessed a power like nothing he had experienced. Every single person involved in making these 3 Egyptian God Cards, met with an untimely end, all but Pegasus who was shown a vision of his demise at the hand of the three god monsters.

Whoever obtains these cards can use them for good and for evil. If an evil heart uses these cards, they can take away a persons soul. In shadow games, they could become the ultimate weapon. Pegasus originally wanted to take care of the cards himself, but he failed, therefore he decided to let these cards sleep forever where they came from, deep underground at the "Valley of Kings" in Egypt. The Egyptian department of archaeology accepted the job and sealed the 3 cards at 3 different locations in the Valley of Kings. However, these powerful cards have resurfaced in order to fulfill their mission, so that the lost Pharaoh may regain his memories, and pass on to the afterlife.

After Pegasus created the God cards, he gave them to Ishizu Ishtar for safe keeping. But two of the 3 were stolen by the Rare Hunters and delivered the their master, Marik Ishtar. Slifer was among the cards stolen.

Marik then gave Slifer to his mind slave, 'Strings the Quiet One' to duel with Yugi Muto in order to claim his Millenium Puzzle and injure Yugi. Strings used a combination of Jam Breeding Machine, Rivival Jam and Jam Defender to summon Slifer to the field, and from then on, Yugi struggled to keep in the game. With his most powerful monsters easily defeated by Slifer and only one defense monster to hide behind his defeat looked certain.

However, with the support of Kaiba, Yugi realized Slifers biggest weakness, a weakness caused by the combination strings had setup to bring Slifers power to ultimate levels. Using brainwash to turn Marik's own Revival Jam against him, Yugi played the ultimate combo. Marik had Jam Defender, Infinite Cards and Card of Safe Return in play and Slifers second mouth automatically attacked every time Revival Jam was revived on Yugi's side of the field, making Marik draw 3 cards. But then Revival jam would revive itself, re-beginning the cycle, and putting Marik into an unbreakable loop. Slifer's attack power continued to grow to insane levels, but there was no way for him to attack while the cycle was in progress. Eventually strings drew so many cards that he could not draw any more and lost the duel by default.

Yugi then got Slifer the Sky Dragon as per the Ante Rule of Battle City, he did not add it to his deck until the Battle City finals.
