This is a serious, true, story. I was grip in the play at Astronaut High School called Once Upon A Matress, in which, on opening day, during the school performance, the person who plays the lead female role got injured on stage. She is supposed to be drunk and she gets up on someone's shoulders and passes out dropping down so that she is laying back-to-back upside down on his shoulders. Just as she lays back, the guy carrying her slips and falls backwards, driving her head into the stage, and snapping her neck back. We were all quiet in the wings backstage. We were scared for Kristen. Agter the curtain closed many people went out to her to see how she was. She was crying out in pain. The director, Nrs. Robinson, was on stage immediately. Mrs. Robinson and the school nurse checked her out and she seemed to be O.K. Kristen wanted to go on with the show... after all "the show must go on," and it did, with Kristen. She got a standing ovation by the audience as well as the backstage crew, when she took her place on stage for Act II. She is a true stoic... a diehard. She loves theatre and is willing to risk injury for it. She showed up for the public performance that night with a neck brace on, but it was just because her neck hurt badly if it wasn't straught. The doctors had checked her out and she was cleared to act. She did the play without the neck brace on. They edited the play slightly. There was to be no picking Kristen up during the performance because her neck couldn't take it. After Act I her pain relivers wore off and she felt sick, but she continued on with the show. She is a real stoic! A real Diehard! She believes that "The show must go on," and it will go on with Kristen as long as she can move, as long as she is concious... a real stoic! This, furthermore proves the theatre saying, "On opening night, anything that can happen, will happen," but no matter what happens, "The show must go on!" |
