The varsity football team started off very strong with a 3 and 1 record, but they finished 5 and 5. It was a disappointing season from a very talented team. They did have a few good games. They beat the Kearney Komets 49 to 7, and then beat Ramona 6 to 0 in a close game where Garvin Gause scored our only touchdown. Next we played South West El Centro and won a very exciting game, 10 to 6. The game was won on Mike Sardina’s 15-yard fade route to the corner to Travis Gibbs that electrified the crowd with time running out in the fourth quarter. The key win this year was Clairemont as we beat them 19 to 0. The team played through some tough injuries. They team lost two of their key players, Charles Mullen to a broken leg, which was suffered against Ramona, and Richard Lowery to a dislocated shoulder, which happened at practice. The team leaders this year were returning all league players Garvin Gause, Brian Johnston, Mike Schmidt, and hard hitting linebacker Jesse Corio. This season we had some key players on our team such as Travis Gibbs, a senior who is a returning all CIF player, and Charles Mullen, who is a returning all league player who transferred from Lincoln High and has made a big impact on our team this year. |
