Chapter History

On Thursday, August 21, 1997, during Roundup (summer band camp), Kappa Kappa Psi held an informational meeting for all interested in Tau Beta Sigma.  It received a lot of attention and approximately twenty-four people attended.  During this meeting we received information about Tau Beta Sigma.  The President of Kappa Kappa Psi, Melissa Soileau, also told us about it and what we would have to do in order to form the chapter.  All people that were still interested held another meeting later that week.  There officers were elected, which were as follows: President-Lameka Trahan, Vice-President-Jaclyn Sells, Second Vice-President-Angela Magee, Treasurer-Rebecca Tramonte, Secretary-Kendra Bartlett, and Historians-Jeri Thompson and Mary Kay Drost.  Soon after things began picking up Mary Kay was voted Corresponding Secretary and Jeri remained Historian.  By October members were assigned big brothers from KKPsi as follows:

Lameka Trahan-Melissa Soileau                Jaclyn Sells-Torrick Fontenot

Mary Kay Drost-Shelia Romine                 Kendra Bartlett-Tyrone Rubin

Rebecca Tramonte-Aimee Richard            Glenda Jones-Kane Bourgeois

Christa Tracy-Kenny Crain                         Daranee Sarakasetrin-Walker Calcott

Deanna Cormier-Walker Calcott                Janet Clark-Shelia Romine

Robynn Miller-Mike McDonald                 Amanda Arredondo-Tyrone Rubin

                                        Amanda Pardon-Matt Jones

Big brothers were given in order to help learn more about the sorority and ways to help the band.

Many months and several service projects later our First Degree was held on February 1, 1998 where our big sister of the Tau Chapter, from U of H, attended and fourteen members went through the ceremony.  The colony soon traveled over to Houston where on Sunday March 15 Second Degree was completed.

The rest of the school year went by slowly because of Spring break and finals coming up so only a few projects were completed.  On Thursday May 7, 1998 the last meeting of the semester was held and line names were decided:

Our pre-installation visit was planned for Saturday, June 20, 1998 where Karen Miller, National Vice-President arrived and met with our sponsors, Dr. Walton and music director Dr. Tevis.

August started out with a meeting on Saturday the 8th at 8:00am.  The meeting was to discuss the chapter installation the next day.  We verified who was crossing and the plans for the next day.  On Sunday, August 9, 1998 the group had finally achieved what had taken a whole year to create.  The morning began with setting up the Parra Ballroom for the installation.  Our big sister chapter from Houston, the national President Debbie Kaplan, the Southwest District President Kathleen Glover and the Southwest District Counselor Denise Tonnessen arrived around 11:00 am.  Installation lasted about three hours.  The Tau Chapter held Third Degree and then the National President installed the colony as the 211th chapter known as THETA TAU.  Our official birth is approximately 2pm.  The Charter Members include:
