What Is D&D?

Dungeons & Dragons, in all its forms (D&D, Advanced D&D, and D&D Third Edition), is a role-playing game where you assume the role of a heroic character of your own creation and take part in fantastic adventures in lands filled with magic, monsters, and danger.

You can be a mighty warrior, clad in armour and wielding a sword against vile monsters. Or a cunning rogue, skilled at acrobatics and full of tricks. You can be a powerful mage, summoning great magicks to confound and destroy your foes. Or a holy priest, fighting for a divine cause and calling upon the powers of the gods themselves. Not only are there these types of characters and more, such as bards, monks, rangers, and sorcerers, but you can also choose to be a human, or maybe one of the non-human races, such as elf, dwarf, halfling, gnome, and half-orc.

The Dungeon Master (DM), is the game moderator, and sets challenges and adventures for the Player Characters (PCs) to meet and overcome. You might face political intrigues, murder and mystery, battling foul monsters and undead, recovering lost artifacts and treasures, or a combination of these and other challenges.

To get started all you need are some of the basic game books, like the Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Player's Handbook, some dice, and paper and pencils. And your imagination. Then you're set to travel the road to fame, fortune, glory, and adventure...
