Zoning
Before finalizing your business location, you need to determine the zoning
of your proposed site and weather any special review or other permit is
necessary. All businesses must locate in areas zoned appropriately
for the particular business, even if you plan to do business out of your
home.
Contact the Planning Division of the Lake County Community
Development Department at 707-263-2221.
Development Review
If you are planning to construct a new building for your business, you need
to apply for a development review permit which takes about 7-10
days for the review. A new business does not need a development review
if it is permitted by the zoning and will be located in an existing
building. The process can be waived if proposals are designed consistant
with adopted standards.

Development Department at 707-263-2221.
SIGNS
Lake County's sign ordinance has recently been made much less restrictive.
PARKING
Off-street parking facilities need to be provided for the convenience your
customers and to prevent traffic hazards.
LANDSCAPING
Lake County has few restrictive architectural requirements and landscaping
is viewed as "cheap architecture."
Building Permits
If you will be constructing a new building, or modifying or improving the
structure your building occupies, you need to first obtain a building
permit. Building Permits cover work related to the building's
physical structure, electrical systems, and plumbing.

Community Development Department at 707-263-2557 or 707-994-6285.

Operating a Business in Your
Home
If you wish to conduct your business from your home, you may qualify as a
home occupation. The county permits certain businesses
to operate in residences as long as the basic residential character of the
neighborhood is not changed.
