Little tidbit about a difference between book and 1941 movie
Gutman is actually killed by Wilmer at the end of the novel while Huston allows the trio to waddle off toward a sequel. The success of The Maltese Falcon led Warner's to suggest Huston and the cast reform for a sequel. The projected Further Adventures of The Maltese Falcon never happened, however - it is just the stuff dreams are made of.
