January 1900

Mon. 1 Estelle Jenney, Pearl, Edith Noyes, Mike Haarer, Edythe Boyd, Charlie Miller, Androus Gulde (different spelling), Arthur, Ernest Dancer, Ransom, Effa, and myself went ice-boating. Had an elegant time. We did not come home till nearly twelve o’clock and sang most of the way.

Wed 3 School commenced again. Will Hammond was married to an Ohio lady. A crowd of boys came up to our house and we organized a club. Voted that we should have a meeting next Wednesday for both boys and girls.

Thurs. 4 The Ann Arbor Dramatic Club gave a play in Chelsea. George Woods was one of the principal actors. Miss Brown and Miss Clarkson stayed at our house. I stayed down at Lillie’s

Fri 5 Read most of the evening. Effa, Arthur and I sang about every song that we knew.

Tues. 9 Effa went back to Ann Arbor after her Christmas vacation. Perfect spring day. Rained in the evening. I went to church.

Wed. 10 A crowd of boys and girls came up to our house to form a club. We decided not to give it a name until our next meeting.

Sat. 13 I piled up some wood in the morning. In the morning Arthur and Clayton Schenk walked up to the lake and in the afternoon I drove up and brought them back.

Wed. 17 Enid and I were the only ones in Latin. Zoe and Emily were sick and Mabel had to stay out of school as Renyolds had the scarlet fever.

Thurs. 18 I went to church in the evening. Enid and I were still the only ones in Latin.

Fri. 19 The Juniors made a fuss because the Seniors did not have to take examinations and the Juniors did and as a result the Seniors had to. Last evening of church. Mr. Jones preached a lovely sermon

Sat. 20 Read in the morning. Mamma and I were home alone as Arthur went up to the lake. Went up to Zoe’s and studied for Rhetoric examination in the afternoon

Sun. 21 Mamma and I went to church in the morning. I was an usher, for the first time, in the evening.

Tues. 23 I took and examination in Physics to Miss Webb. I think I passed it. Another lovely day. Was classified for the next semester. Zoe and I studied Greek in the afternoon.

Wed. 24 I took my examination in greek. Had to write out the whole verb (?) Zoe and I studied Latin the whole afternoon. Colder. Mamma received a letter from Effa

Fri 26 the Mason’s had a weighing social in the evening. After hunting up your partner you went and were weighed. I got Carrie Maroney and there was jus one pounds difference in our weight so I only had to pay one cent for our supper. I had a lovely time. Very cold day.

Mon. 29 Commenced the second semester with Physics, Geometry, Latin and Greek

Tues. 30 Took my first lesson in Geometry. Got along finely in it. Our club had a meeting up at Zoe’s. It was named the I.F.’s

February 1900

Sun. 4 Did not go to church of Sunday School in the morning as we had such a hard snowstorm it took me most all of the morning to clean the sidewalks. Christian Endeavor had charge of the evening service

Thurs. 8 Effa came home. I learned that she and Ernest Dancer were engaged. Her ring is about as pretty a diamond as I ever saw.

Mon. 12 Zoe and I studied in the evening. Ernest, Mamma, Effa, Arthur and myself played Crazy Pedro after I got through studying.

Wed. 14 Enid entertained the I.F.’s. Every member was there.

Thurs. 20 Mr. Jones took his third degree in Masonry so the Star Ladies gave them a surprise party at the hall and I attended.

March 1900

Thurs. 1 Went to a lecture and Stereoptican views at the Congregational Church

Sat. 3 Effa came home on the late train in the evening. Lovely day. Went sleigh riding in the afternoon

Mon. 5 Snowed hard all day. Read most of the evening. Effa went back to Ann Arbor, but her train was three hours late. A year ago today Arthur was taken sick.

Wed 7 The I.T.’s made up a sleigh-party and went to the lake and had an oyster supper. Mrs. Dr. Bush was our chaperone.

Tues. 13 Went to town hall to a meeting to see whether or not the village should grant a franchise to the electric railway Co. I had more fun than a circus.

Fri 23 Went down to Enid Holmes’ to a progressive pedro party. School out for a week’s vacation.

Sat. 24 In the morning I cleaned out my desk, and in the afternoon rummaged around in the garret.

Mon. 26 Mamma and I cleaned the cellar and garret. Went up to Morgan Emmet’s in the evening to a progressive pedro party.

Tues. 27 Ransom got ready to go over on his farm. I helped him all day. I had the sore throat.

Wed. 28 Ransom went over to his farm. Lovely day. Read in the aftenoon

April 1900

Sat. 7 Papa, Arthur, and myself went up to the lake and built a chicken coop. Perfectly lovely day

Tues. 10 I got a new suit and complete outfit. Read in the evening.

Fri. 13 Effa came home for her Spring vacation. I went to the last of the entertainments of the winter course entitled "The Park Sisters."

Sun. 15 "Easter" Perfectly lovely day. I wore my new spring suit for the first time.

Tues. 17 Ransom’s twenty seventh birthday. Ernest was up in the evening.

Mon. 23 Ernest was up in the evening, and we played Whist. Papa went to Chicago

Sat. 28 Mamma had a spell with her stomach. Arthur and Papa drove up to the lake in the afternoon.

Mon. 30 We commenced camping at the lake. Lovely Day

May 1900

Wed. 2 Aunt Frank Goodell died. (Kaye, do you suppose this is Helen Francis Hosmer, wife of James?) Mamma went to Detroit.

Sun. 6 Went to church in the morning. Mamma and I drove up to the lake in the afternoon. Mamma had just got out of the buggy when the ponies became frightened and ran down the hill back of the cottages. I was thrown out, but was not hurt severely except to be considerably jogged up. Margaret Vogel had a baby girl born.

Thurs. 10 I bet Edyth Bacon a box of Lowney’s chocolates she would not dare to sit with me in chapel and I lost. Elegant day.

Sun. 13 Arthur and I were baptized and Effa and Arthur and I joined the church.

Mon. 14 Carrie Hoffman came to our house to work. We all came to the lake. Lovely day. Effa went back to Ann Arbor.

Thurs. 31 Effa’s twenty-third birthday. She went back to college. Ernest gave her a lovely bracelet for her birthday, and Mamma, Arthur and I bought her a music cabinet.

June 1900

Sat. 2 I started to ride my wheel to the lake but as it broke down I came up with Mr. Doyle’s people in the afternoon. Had dinner at Lillie’s

Thurs. 14 Last day of school in my Junior year. I have certainly passed the pleasantest year of my school life although I have worked the hardest.

Fri. 22 Arthur was graduated from eighth grade. Mamma and I went downtown to the exercises. Rained all day. Dr. martin of Ann Arbor came to our house.

Fri. 29 Auntie Gates, Margaret Vogel, Esther Depew, and Mrs. L. Tichenor spent the day at the lake with us. Effa and I went downtown in the evening. Lillie Depew’s thirty-first birthday.

Sat. 30 Effa and I read "No. 5. John St." We intended to go to town in the afternoon, but the ponies were out to pasture and we could not catch them.

July 1900

Tues. 3 Effa and I drove to town and Mamie, Marion, Esther, Lillie and Harlan came back to the lake with us to spend the fourth

Wed. 4 Alton Fletcher and Ernest came up in the morning. Very warm but we had lots of fun. I went driving in the afternoon

Thurs. 5 Mamie and Alton and the baby went home. Very warm. Went in swimming twice.

Fri. 6 Lillie and the children went home. Papa and Arthur went over to see Ransom. Went up to Miss Muigay’s and played cards

Sat. 14 Joe and Kittie Wrinker (?) (This is Kittie Goodell, daughter of James, but I can’t decipher the last name) came to our house to spend a few days. Lovely day, but rather warm.

Mon. 23 Papa’s fifty-sixth birthday. Kittie and Joe went home.

August 1900

Thurs. 2 In the evening all of the boys and girls went over to Johnny Bower’s and he played on his accordian and on a pear-leaf. Mabelle Bacon broke her glasses. I got a letter from Lee Jenney saying Ralph and he would come out to the lake.

Fri. 3 My seventeenth birthday. We all went in bathing in the afternoon. In the evening I went down to a C.E. Ice Cream Social on Mrs. Geo. Kempf’s lawn. After it was over Maybelle and Annie Bacon , Enid, Effa and I drove back to the lake. Nice moon light evening.

Sat. 4 We boys went in bathing in the afternoon. Went downtown in the evening. Ransom and Arthur came home in the evening.

Sun. 5 Very hot. Went in bathing in the morning at the swimming hole and in front of the cottages in the evening. Mr. Jones preached on Mr. Belser’s porch in the evening.

Tues. 7 Mabelle Bacon, Enid, Leigh Palmer and I went over to a "Farmer’s Picnic" at North Lake. We had an elegant time, but had our lunches stolen in the evening

Fri. 10 Ransom and I started about eight o’clock for Durand (This is near Corunna and Owosso, North of Lansing) we travelled all night and reached Fowlerville about nine o’clock the next morning (Fowlerville is east of Lansing)

Sat. 11 We rested in Fowlerville all day and at night started for Ransom’s farm. We reached it about one o’clock that night.

Mon. 13 I helped Ransom and Dennis carry brush out of the orchard. Lovely day

Wed. 15 Went to town in the afternoon and again in the evening. Finished carrying the brush out of the orchard.

Thurs. 16 In the morning I went to Ann Arbor. I stayed with George Woods all of the morning and came on to Chelsea in the evening

Fri 17 Fooled around all day. In the evening we had a corn roast down on the tennis court. We all had an elegant time.

Sat 18 In the evening all the boys and girls in camp went over to Mr. Babcock’ peach orchard. Afterwards we all sat down on the bank and watched the strange light across the lake.

Sun. 19 Stayed at the lake all day. In the afternoon we all went over to Miss Haareo’s (?) and told stories. Mr. Wicking, a ventriloquist, and a friend of Miss Haaoro’s (?) was there and offered a fine lot of amusements.

Mon. 20 A party of us went over to Prospect Hill and spent the afternoon. We were caught in a wind and rain storm coming back and then to crown all, we met a thrashing machine. We all had an elegant time. In the evening we all went over to Miss Haanoro’s and played progressive pedro. I got the booby prize – a quarter of a pumpkin pie

Thurs. 21 The Catholics had a picnic at the lake. Edna Hall came to the lake to visit Edyth Bacon. I went downtown and brought back Lillie and the children and little Elsie Stephens. Effa got a little cocker spaniel that we named Nux (?) In the evening I had a progressive pedro party and served ice cream. Lillie made some white candy which was fine – Edna Hall got first prize

September 1900

Mon. 3 Rather warm day. I commenced school in my Senior year with Latin, Geometry, Greek and History. In the evening we gave a progressive pedro party for Laura Gates. There were four tables. Leigh Palmer got first and Harvey Muller booby prize

October 1900

Sun. 7 Mamma, Papa, Arthur came down. Our camping for 1900 finished. Rained hard in the morning so Effa and I did not go to church.

Mon. 8 Rather cold day. Mamma and Papa started for Ransom’s

Wed. 10 Eunice Plass was married Read "Hugh Wynne" by S. Weir Mitchell

November 1900

Sat. 3 Estelle Jenney came to spend Sunday wirh Effa. Arthur drove the ponies up to the lake. It was the first time that he had done so alone. Effa and I rake the yard in the afternoon

While Estelle took a nap as she was suffering from a severe headache. In the evening Edith Noyes and Miss Haaker cam up and we played six handed pedro. While playing we heard the first whistle blow, but found it to be only Mr. Chandler’s chimney burning out and did not prove to be at all serious

Tues. 6 President McKinley was re-elected for a second term of office. I was down to the town hall most of the evening. We had our first snow storm.

Fri. 16 Mrs. Libbie Stone who was Libbie Techenor before her second marriage had dinner at our house. Effa and I made preparations to go to Ransom’s the next day. It was such a lovely day, Mamma and Charlie DePew drove up to the lake and got some things. Ernest was up in the evening.

Sat. 17 Effa and I started for Ransom’s about eight o’clock. We got to Fowlerville about three where we had our dinner. We did not get to Ransom’s until nearly ten o’clock as we lost our way after we got beyond Fowlerville. As Ransom did not know we were coming he was greatly surprised at seeing us.

Sun. 18 Rained all day. In the evening Jannine and Ray Crawford, Ray’s brother Howard, and John Allen came over to Ransom’s in all the rain and Effa went back with them. After they went away Ransom, Den. and I went over to Mr. Dickey’s and spent the evening.

Mon. 19 It was still raining in the morning, but I started for home. As we were going to leave the team at Ransom’s for the winter, I came home on the train. I arrived at Ann Arbor about twelve o’clock and took dinner at Mr. Woods. In the afternoon I went up to Leigh Palmer’s rooms. Spent a very nice day and came home on the eleven o’clock train in the evening.

Tues. 20 Went to school again after my little vacation. The Senior’s sweaters came. They were a beautiful shade of red with striped sleeves and "C.H.S. ‘01" on the front. I wore mine in the afternoon. I was over to Mr. Hoover’s in the evening.

Wed. 21 In the evening Enid, Leon, Zoe, Car, Mabelle, and myself went to the Baptist Fair. We all had an elegant time. In the auction each of the gir’s got a broom bag, Leon a rolling-pin, Carl a pair of gaters (?) and I an apron. We all wore our sweaters except Leon.

December 1900

Mon. 3 Commenced school again after our Thanksgiving vacation. Mamma and Papa went to Parma. Wrote to Edith Bacon

Fri 7 I waited on table at the Christian Endeavor supper. At the auction I bought a chair for Papa

Sun. 9 Effa went out to Ernest’s home with him. Amelia went down to the christening of her nephew so Arthur and I were left alone about all day. Went to a lecture in the Methodist Church in the afternoon and went to church in the evening

Mon. 10 Mamma and Papa came home from Parma. In the afternoon Papa went down to Ann Arbor

Fri. 21 My last day of school in the Nineteenth Century. Went to church again in the evening

Sat. 22 Ransom came home in the evening to spend his Christmas vacation. I went to a lecture at the Town hall in the evening. Papa and Arthur went ice-boating up to the lake

Sun. 23 Did not go to church in the morning but went in the afternoon and again in the evening. Ernest was up to dinner. Finished reading the Bible through

Mon. 24 Worked around all day getting ready for Christmas. In the afternoon I went downtown. Went to a Christmas entertainment in the Congregational church in the evening.

Tues. 25 Our last Christmas in the Nineteenth Century. Lillie, Charlie, their children, Mamie, and Alton, and Marion , Mrs. Winans, and Miss DePew, ate Christmas dinner with us. In the evening we had our Christmas tree. I got lots of nice presents, among them military brushes, an ebony clothes brush, and some beautiful mirrors.

Wed. 26 In the morning enjoyed my Christmas presents. I went to the lake in the afternoon with Leon Kempf ice-boating and had an elegant time.

Thurs. 27 Leigh Plamer and I drove up to the lake in the morning and stayed nearly all day. Had a fine time. I was vaccinated in the morning.

Fri. 28 I intended to go to the lake but was rather sick so stayed at home most all day. Read in the afternoon.

Mon. 31 Last day of the Nineteenth Century. I worked around most all day. In the evening I went to a Watch meeting in the Congregational Church.
