Who can join?
Any JCLer can join the GSCL beginning at the GJCL State Convention of his or her senior year in high school. Former JCLers are welcome to join at any time until the ninth National Convention following his or her high school graduation.
It is not necessary to take Latin in college to be a member of the GSCL, nor is it necessary that members attend college in Georgia. Many members and past officers have gone to college outside of Georgia.
JCLers from other states who attend college in Georgia and are members of the GSCL chapter at their college or university have a dual membership, being a member of the SCL chapter in their home state (if there is one) and the GSCL.
What does the GSCL do?
As an arm of the Georgia Junior Classical League and an affiliated chapter of the National Senior Classical League, the GSCL participates in many activities on the national, state, and local levels.
- National Level:
- NJCL Convention: SCL is in charge of the organization of Olympika and Ludi, the production of That's Entertainment, and the publication of The Convention Ear. Other responsibilities include the General Assemblies, a banquet, and a hospitality room.
- NSCL Scholarships: The NSCL awards two scholarships each year to students majoring in the classics.
- Other SCL events on the national level are also held each year and are traditionally occasions for fun and fellowship.
- State Level:
- GJCL Fall Forum: The GSCL helps organize and run the Olympika, assists in spirit judging, and a runs a concession stand. GSCL also hosts workshops from time to time, and one of two yearly GSCL general meetings is held during Fall Forum.
- GJCL State Convention: At Convention, GSCL helps run the Olympika, assists in proctoring of tests, and organizes various Ludi events for JCLers. GSCL also assists with various chaperoning responsibilities and has often been involved in running the GJCL That's Entertainment. The GSCL also hosts a mixer for graduating seniors and holds its second general meeting and elections at Convention.
- GSCL State Latin Exam: Each year, the GSCL develops a State Latin Exam for Georgia schools to give in February as preparation for the ACL/NJCL National Latin Exam.
- The GSCL organizes social events on a monthly basis during the year. Past socials have included the Stone Mountain Laser Show, miniature golf, viewing Disney's Hercules. Check the calendar for upcoming events.
- Local Level:
- We are in the process of starting local chapters at several colleges and universities in the state of Georgia.
How much does it cost?
